  • Unfortunately it appears that there will always be those among us that find it perfectly normal to butcher this and commonly utter other such gems as...

    - nucular
    - irregardless (unless truly intending "without lack of regard for" )
    - Barnes and Nobles
    - Victoria's Secrets
    - Clinton Hills

Who needs to spell that word, when we have much better words, like T-R-I-N-I-D-A-D-I-A-N?

  • Why can't New Yorkers spell Manhattan? There's no E. Pathetic
  • why do so many people online spell ridiculous "rediculous"?

why do people insist that they're "weary" of things they are "wary" of (not just the time daver pointed it out, either)?

more to the point, why do people not install spell check on their web browsers?
  • One of my big pet peeves:

"a lot" is NOT spelled "alot". Ever.
  • Your not saying their are that many people who's spelling ability is hammpered by theyre lack of an education in basic English are ya?

I don't give a shit how you spell it. How do you say it! Where does the accent fall, if you're so smart.

How do you say Hawaii? Is it Hawaii or is it Havaii? The vampire replies, "Havaii". You say "thanks". He says, "you're velcome".

My vote's for "Ca-RIB'-bean" (where caps and ' denote the accent/emphasis)

Unlike the Disneyland of my childhood, with it's "Pirates of the Ca-rib-BEAN' " ride, with em-PHAH'-sis on the wrong syl-LA'-ble.

WRONG! Only tourists say it that way.
  • Ah. Darn then. Guess that puts Jimmy Buffett in error, too.

I was guilty of this until quite recently.
  • Alright, then.

Well, somebody please hook me up with the right pronunciation, then.

Is it actually "Ca-rib-BE'-an" (as per the aforementioned Disney of youth) then, instead of "Ca-RIB'-be-an" (as Jimmy B. and myself have used) ?

My lovely Haitian husband says you can pronounce it either way. No one in his rather large family, as far as he can remember, has corrected someone for saying it one way or the other.

In other words, a lot of people have better things to worry about.

    EDIT: 1000th post! Wheee!
  • why can't non-southerners* spell y'all?

    you all = y'all

    not yall
    not ya'll

    y'all
apostrophe goes in place of the missing letters, y'all.

    related: "y'all" is plural.

*i'd say yankees, except it's not just yankees.
