Hi Linda C, its not often that someone drops in from my side of the prospect exp LOL. Hope you can share some names that you might remember, or maybe your brother would, he would be about my age, 57 and you would be my sister Roseanns' age, we lived on 16th and 6th for many years. Just some names I remember from 16th and 6th ...Clark(Bill and John) the Mileys, the McFees, Hilldreth, Caraguillio, Powers, Napoli also...small printing shop in the middle of the block,Irvings....carpet wharehouse across the street from that, ok thats enough, I'm starting to remember addresses, LOL, and I can't remember what happened yesterday.
Both I and my older brother went to St John's and he being 7 years older went to John Jay before our move. I must tell him about this site, he would remember more than me.
I remember the days of strolling down 5th ave, shopping with mom and/or grandma. Taking a very long walk with mom to the movie theater near prospect park. Shopping at Woolworth's, the pork store, the pasta store....
Had all our immediate relatives from both sides of the family within blocks of each other. Met at maternal grandma's almost every Sunday for dinner or coffee. How things have changed, all family members moved to different parts of the state and beyond. And yes, we did drink coffee & wine (mixed w/soda) as children.
I'll never forget the nurses face at St John's. I was in second grade. A classmate of mine was ill and had to go to the nurse. My teacher asked if I would go with her. The nurse asked the sick girl what she had for breakfast (trying to determine what made her sick) and then she asked me (so I wouldn't feel left out or just being nosey). I told her I had oatmeal, juice and a cup of coffee. I'll never forget her face! Needless to say, my mother got a phone call from the principal yelling at her for giving me coffee! Well, I never did like milk! Now I'm lactose intolerant! Go figure. -
