Brooklyn Back When - Open Thread

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy 4th, did not have
time to read back, be safe out there wherever you are.

I'm already late, gotta run...off to the OLD COUNTRY, I'll
be on 22nd street on the roof but probably won't see much
this year. Macy's moved the fireworks from the east river to
the Hudson. Nice that they want to give the Jersey folks a chance,
dirty b*st*rds, lol. see ya later. (looking around for loose
change for gas and tolls, LOL)

THE 4TH OF JULY

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men

who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,

and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;

another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or

hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes,

and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants,

nine were farmers and large plantation owners;

men of means, well educated,

but they signed the Declaration of Independence

knowing full well that the penalty would be death if

they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and

silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

I hope you will show your support by sending this to as many people as you can, please. It's time we get the word out that patriotism

and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

THOUGHT OF A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD MEMORY FOR 4TH OF JULY..

Having lived right across from Toto Marino's (Dixie Tavern) we had
front row seats. I am sure you all remember the wonderful fireworks
display he put on for the kids (well, not him personally LOL). And
what was great about it - that all the neighborhood kids, no matter
what their nationality, would co-exist and share the excitement.
I can still see kids sitting along the side-walks.

And yes it was so much fun to go out and play with the 'left-over' fireworks the next morning. My favorite were the cracker balls that
you'd throw hard on the floor and they'd explode. I loved smoking
the punks, pretending they were cigarettes.

Then the sanitation trucks would come with heavy force, and
wash away all the garbage. Of course My mom had already swept most of 20th Street by that time. (LOVE & MISS YOU MOMMY, IN CASE YOUR 'READING' FROM HEAVEN)

Those were wonderful days with memories that warm my heart.
That none of us would trade for anything.

Hey Ant .....me & you and Matteo Caravella, Fidel Orlando, Anthony Paladino 19st, Joey Guido, Maria Tombasco,
Diane Davis go way back to grade school. We have a special kind of love for eachother .... a bond like a brother or sister.
When you were walking down 17st going to that train station ....I was 6 mos pregnant with Janelle and probably on my knees
hugging the toilet bowl with morning sickness. If I only knew that was where you were going ....I probably would have tied
you up to the gate.....for fear of letting you go. But, your still here ....Thank you God....with us.... to share another 4th of July.
In school you were always the one to have us cracking up
and getting us into trouble, either by walking down the aisle ....and rubbing our heads saying EISHHH or giving NOOGIES.
Better yet ....us girls had to wear shorts under our uniform skirts because of you and the rest of the guys.
We couldnt walk up the stairs without the back of our skirt flying up...LOL.
I just want to say ...thank you so much for giving me all those memories.....I love you Ant and Im so proud of the Man you have become.
Your Daughters have a very Special Dad ....and we have a date to hear that same story next 4th of July

I think we are going to watch the fireworks tonight at this
place Lake Julian. Really not sure if I want to go since I
am really not impressed any more with them. Guess I saw
so much growing up, even at Coney Island every Tuesday
night for what seemed like a whole month before July. I may go
just to watch the kids watch them.

Even at Disney, I rather skip the fireworks.

Hope everyone had a good and safe 4th. Fireworks are going off all around me. The SIA was please to print the police cracked down once again removing fireworks from proposed sellers on Island, psssssss they missed the South Shore lmao.

Suzie, go in your place for what? I must had missed something of important along the way, back pages! whats going on if I may be so bold to ask?

This morning got up made a pot of coffee blogged with u guys, went down and rode the bike for 70 minutes.
I came back up went to get another cup of coffee and the plug was pulled out of the wall. I was the only one home..Now u may think I am crazy BUT...I did not pull that plug out. People have seen things in this house including myself. One of my cousins said I would move out really fast if that was me. Well my Dad Mike died in this house exactly around the same time my plug was pulled out exactly 10 years ago. I know some of you reading already think I am nuts and now probably really really think I am crazy.
Anyway I believe in this stuff. I always feel he is here as a matter of fact right where I am typing and have my computer is where he passed. I feel his presence alot here. Maybe because I am open to the belief of spirits being around and watching over us is why I feel the presence of him.
