Eight injured when waterfront home burns in early morning blaze

TOMS RIVER — An early morning fire at 256 Kathryn St. in the Ocean Beach section sent eight people to the hospital, including one woman who was flown to a burn unit, officials said.

Neighbors of the emblazoned house were awakened by screams and the popping noises of breaking glass and burning wood, they said.

The house was occupied by 17 persons who were at the address because they were attending a 21st birthday party the evening before, said District 1 Fire Chief John Novak.

At first when firefighters arrived they were told that a person was trapped on the second floor of the two-story structure, Novak said. Firefighters did an initial search for the person but did not find anyone inside. The firefighters were forced to evacuate the house because of the extensive fire, he said.

The person they were searching for was found outside the house, Novak said.

Gail Marini, 69, lives on San Fernando Drive, across the lagoon from the waterfront house. "I woke up about 5 a.m. to screaming and sounds of breaking glass," Marini said. "I came out on to the porch to see a massive black cloud" in the
sunrise light, she said. "But the screaming that woke me up."

Toms River Fire Company was assisted by Seaside Heights, Ocean Beach, East Dover, Lavallette fire companies. The Triboro First Aid, Toms River Police EMS and Monoc paramedics assisted.

The fire remains under investigation by the Toms River Police, Ocean County Fire Marshals Office and the Ocean County Prosecutors Office. The Ocean County Sheriffs Department also assisted.

Terry - It states that a women was flown to the burn unit. I hope it was not April. I hope who ever it was will be OK and was not burned too badly.. God what next...

Those shore houses are always rented & occupied by lots of people... These kids get together & pool their money to party. It is really normal... I am just praying that no one really got burned or hurt that bad... Thank God they all got out with their lives & no one was killed... God Forbid!

was in the old neighborhood today walking on 5th avenue
its so different what used to be the police station then became
a municipal parking lot is now a big ass project type building
on 16th street...
I started yellin these damn yuppies destroyin my neighborhood
i mean every block u got these tall narrow buildings all condos
i hate change!!!! banks on every corner and condo buildings yuck
i miss the old stores on 5th

I got a little sick when I went back the last time. My mothers house looks wrecked.... The neighborhood has changed, but my feelings & memories of yesteryear has not...
