Prospect Heights Guide — Brooklynian

Prospect Heights Guide

Is there any plan in the works to migrate the guide to the dailyheights or to clean it up. Perhaps make it look somewhat similar to a citysearch format. Obviously it would be lots of work but now that we are Nabe of the year we need to look legit... right?

If it wasn't clear I would totally help with this any way I could. A good way to use my English degree.

slightly related - did anyone notice this?

(well, the site is down right now for some reason but ...)

    http://brooklyn.citysearch.com/
  • Yeah, I've used that before.
  • a guide would be nice. to see what could be had where and a good rating system to go with it.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. The wiki?

Well that is the only thing that could be currently considered a "guide" for prospect heights at this point. Just wondering if there were any plans to make something more formal and attached more specifically to the DH.

It would be a fun group project, but time is the big obstacle. We haven't even thought about it in a while. If someone wants to volunteer to spruce it up, I'm sure Andy would be cool with that.
  • Actually, anyone can edit it, I think (it is a wiki after all) so we don't need to find a single volunteer or anything--we could all make an effort to add to it. I think the main problem is that it's just tiresome to transfer info from here to the wiki, and Andy doesn't have time.
  • What's the link to the Wiki? I am bored.
  • The neighborhood description in the wiki is total garbage. I'll replace it with text from Neighborhoods of Brooklyn unless anyone has an objection.

    metulj: wiki
  • And Washington Avenue, from Atlantic Avenue to Eastern Parkway, consists of vacant storefronts, poorly maintained sidewalks, run-down bodegas and faltering Mom and Pop stores.
    LOCK YOU DOORS
  • Fair enough on the time issue. I know that anyone can update wiki merely seeing if there was anything in the works to bring anything here.

Yeah I was about to change that as well. If you do it first more power to you. That description sounds like it was from about 6 years ago.
  • I did a little bit of work on the restaurants page. The wiki is a mess and wildly so.

ALSO: Could someone fix the damn image on the front page. It is locked and can't be fixed. Whole thing needs help!
  • I am dicking around with the bar/restaurant thing right now. Not sure if comments are really necessary, but I will leave them there for now.

I hope to clean up some of the other stuff over the weekend and maybe add some pictures.

The real problem with wikipedia is that it is really hard to keep things clean which is why I was wondering if there was going to be any kind of push to formalize the process at all.

I think there is a mod to do publish approval, but that seems a bit much. We could divvy up the pages, agree on a template and have one person who keeps an eye on each page under. This would allow us to stop any nefarious Ft. Greene posters from dizzin' the nabe. :P
  • I rewrote the about page, and reverted the services page to an earlier spam-free version.
  • Andy will be so happy when he realizes that people have rediscovered those pages and are updating them. The only thing I'd suggest is that if you create new text, you include links for potential new pages so that other people are inspired to create them. I think the way to create a blank (red) link is to type the text in double square brackets.

Or you can give the new items Wiki-style names like GrandArmyPlaza (no spaces) which should make it do that automatically).
Just as an example, on the about PH page, all the terms like "Washington Avenue," "Brooklyn Botanic Garden" and so forth could be red links so that it's easy for other people to click on them and add more content.

    done!
  • is it possible to delete? for example when people add non-PH info?
  • Yep, just edit the page and take out the spam.
