How do these meetings usually go down? Minutes, snacks, networking? Cops sitting stone-faced as residents complain and lieutenant reads unenthused statements? Active participation and ponies for everyone?

The purpose is to give local citizens a chance to meet the officers policing them, get an understanding of what is going on in the neighborhood, raise issues the police may not be aware of, and generally create an atmosphere of cooperation between the police and the residents.

The meetings differ slightly from precinct to precinct. I've participated at both the 77th and the 79th. The 77th is a lot more formal. Usually there are a bunch of regulars (mostly senior citizens) so the meetings tend to be slightly less of the stone face and more of the making nice with grandma variety. They can be very useful if for no other reasons than putting faces with names and knowing who to call when there is a problem. In the 77th, all the elected officials attend, which never happened when I went to meetings in the 79th. Also, they usually do things like host fundraisers for PAL or the Explorers. Bus rides, concerts, etc are the norm for the precinct council.

Its worth attending at least one, just to see what's going on.
