Homeless man at 7th Avenue Q stop

Wondering if anyone knows about the homeless man who is often at the 7th Avenue Q stop. He is tall, with dreds, and sometimes appears to be high and/or hearing voices. I often see commuters talking to him -- there seem to be a lot of people who look out for/check in with him. Does anyone know his deal?

He's been there as long as I've been in this neighborhood (since about 2001). He's a tad annoying; but I do find it interesting that the locals engage in conversation with to the extent that they do (I think it's a function of this little corner of the NYC Universe --- I think people are just nicer and more authentically concerned and generous than in other places in the City --- or else he is a local who's had bad times and long-time residents remember him prior to his current sad situation --- purely speculation on my part here of course). I think he's harmless. however, and I wouldn't be overly concerned if I were you. BUT as they say, we're Not In Kansas Anymore Toto, so as a general rule, keep your ears and Eyes Wide Open.
  • I see him every morning on my way to work. He seems friendly and is always talking to commuters. Plus, when he panhandles he is courteous and respectful, unlike the loudmouth in front of Sea Land.
  • I actually kind of like the loudmouth outside of Sea Land... he is good at what he does, and always polite (to me, at least). I certainly have gotten worse shout-outs on the street. I do wonder though what kind of arrangement he has with the Sea Land management that they tolerate him standing out there talking up their customers.
  • I like the Sea Land guy, too. He fucking works that shit. I think the guy you're talking about it Levi, he's harmless but my friend once paid him (in advance like an idiot) to help him move something upstairs and he never showed up.
  • I hate to be the bad guy, but it annoys me that people are so nice to that guy. There have been several occassions over the 8 years that I have lived in the neighborhood that I have seen human feces on the platform. I know that it is unfair to judge anyone without evidence, but I would be willing to bet it was him or some other person that calls the station home that dropped a deuce in the station. I will admit, however, that I do not dislike that guy as much as I used to detest the guy who would sit on the steps leading to Park Place during rush hour and indignantly beat his change cup against his leg while blocking throngs of people from leaving the station.

That guy in front of sealand is an anoying jackass. doesnt take nickels only dimes and up.
  • Huh? I've given him pennies, I'm sure. Sometimes I just scrape change out of my wallet and give it to him. And I never give anyone quarters 'cos I need them for laundry.

    'S definitely not true.
  • I find that guy in front of Sealand very aggressive and annoying. I don't like being accosted for money everytime I go shopping there.
  • My favorite is the guys who shout "God Bless You!" to guilt-trip you, because you ignored them and didn't give them your spare change.
  • It could be worse. Today, I was walking by the yuppie Key Food on Flatbush and a panhandler approached me for money. I told him that I was sorry, but I didn't have any change (I didn't). He started following me and yelling "Sorry doesn't fill up my belly", "Sorry! Give me a break!", etc...
I went in to Kings Pharmacy to pick up a few things. When I came out, the guy actually had the gall to ask me AGAIN. This time I had change, but he sure wasn't getting any.
    I also told him I wasn't sorry...
  • The 7th Avenue B/Q guy was actually above ground early Saturday morning. He was panhandling at the stairs near the old Pavillion at 8am.

He probably has 2 schedules, his M-F and his S/S.
  • The sealand was ok with me until one day he put his arm around my shoulder like we were buddies, I havent given him a dime since. I have a problem with panhandlers that try to block your path as well.
