Anyone have any experience with PS38? — Brooklynian

Anyone have any experience with PS38?

A business associate of mine just moved to NYC. Her child tested into the gifted program in her former state and she had his scores forwarded to NY. She was told by DOE that her child was eligible to be placed in a gifted class here. However, her district (13) doesn't have a gifted class but a seat is available at PS 38. She's trying to find out any info on the school and the gifted program that she can. Being new to the city she's not quite sure where to look.

Thanks

  • insideschools.org is a pretty good place to start, though there are other school "review" sites as well. You can look at the *evil* school report cards - not to "judge" the school as successul or not, rather to see some of the issues faced there as well as the things that are working. Also, check if the school has a website, and if there is a parent coordinator there you should be able to take a tour as well as talk to current parents...

from what i understand, it is a school in transition (making positive change).
  • I'm surprised about district 13 not having a gifted class at all--for example, ps 282 has a gifted class (unless this has changed over the last year) and it is in district 13.

Anyway, about ps 38: it is underused, which is good in that the class sizes are smaller, but there won't be the kind of strong PTA or parent community on the whole that you would find in other schools. However, as with any underused school, I would visit it and give it a thorough look because some of these schools can be very good, it's just that they have been flying under the radar and don't have the reputations that other schools have.
