Child abuse witnessed in South Slope store — Brooklynian

Child abuse witnessed in South Slope store

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I was riding the bus on 7th Ave in South Slope last night and witnessed a pretty horrible incident. A guy - late 40s perhaps - was walking down 7th with a kid of perhaps 10 yrs. The kid was carrying a bike helmet when suddenly the guy turned around and smacked the helmet out of his hands. The kid started crying and picked up the helmet and then threw it down again in a sort of tantrum. No big deal, I thought.

Then, the guy grabbed the kid by his jacket, at the neck and the lower back, picked him up off the ground, and threw him into the doorway of a store onto the floor (door was open, not through the door). He then walked up to the boy, who was lying on his back, and kicked him at least twice. The store had several people in it.

The woman behind the counter came around and helped the boy up. She appeared to be related to both the kid and guy. They talked while she tried to comfort the crying boy.

Pretty shocking and sad. Makes me wonder what kind of family dynamic is at work there.

  • 911. Throwing a kid on the ground and kicking him multiple times deserves a call. At minimum.

Fucking Park Slope. Hate that place.
  • action was taken.

Good to hear. Hope they give that kid a decent home somewhere.
  • what store was this?

    I agree. 911
  • How horrible!
what store was this and what sort of action was taken? Do you know if the police came? And, how did you see so much while riding the bus?

    jealous much?

 But seriously, child abuse happens everywhere, it's ignorant to blame a neighborhood. In fact, from my experience growing up in a poor, largely minority neighborhood is I found that affluent parts of town suffered less from child abuse.

But- at least I didn't get warned this time!

Although you just "seriously" called me ignorant, and that isn't very nice!

But no need to worry, I don't take it seriously enough to file a police report, so I won't complain...

So is that why it’s widely known in your household that you're pretty ghetto?

Oh, and before the _WARNING_: link
is I found that affluent parts of town suffered less from child abuse.
Economics are certainly a predictor in child abuse, as are anxiety (which economics can directly influence,) whether the household is one or two parent, and probably more than anything the sociocultural roots are direct support within the community. Among other things. But child abuse certainly exists in every socioeconomic level.

And if you don't think making little girls wear girls caps and little boys wear boys caps isn't abuse, then.

    Just then.

  • Wait, did someone lose they're blue cap?

yes, I'm the first to admit I can be pretty ghetto, meh, I love my background and wouldn't trade it for the world.

    So.

How do you know it's a boy's cap???

  • It was brown.
  • how come none of the Park Slope defenders haven't claimed that this person could not have been from the Slope?

...are they working at the co-op, volunteering at PS 321? Where are you!?
  • Still waiting to hear what store this was in.

"Not worth the bother" would be one possible answer.
  • hee hee yeah whynot, they had to be from crown heights
    D'Oh!!
  • Another resource for reporting child abuse is the NYS Central Register at 1-800-342-3720.

All too often people shake their heads about this sort of thing and then never act. Thanks for being an exception, lurker.
  • Drano, meet Mamacita.

Mamacita, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Drano

Another one is a rule my mother taught me: Never argue with a fool. People might not know the difference.
  • I'd rather not name the store. If the woman I saw was indeed the proprietor, I dont' think she needs the added punishment of this story getting picked up on Curbed or the like.

Longtimesloper, my bus was at the stop and this all happened very quickly. I was able to verify that the police did show up.
  • sure holds true for one ms. palin, jamzer.

your mother is a wise woman, it sounds like...
  • I'm disappointed, no fools have appeared to claim the family must have been from elsewhere.

...but am glad the police were called.

That is all just so sad! I hope the kid is ok!

I'll reference the rule I mentioned above.....
  • true, I am off topic. I'll bring an old thread back.... then watch the fools go at it. It beats watching the market crash.
  • Boy, that 7th ave bus IS slow...
