Child abuse witnessed in South Slope store

I was riding the bus on 7th Ave in South Slope last night and witnessed a pretty horrible incident. A guy - late 40s perhaps - was walking down 7th with a kid of perhaps 10 yrs. The kid was carrying a bike helmet when suddenly the guy turned around and smacked the helmet out of his hands. The kid started crying and picked up the helmet and then threw it down again in a sort of tantrum. No big deal, I thought.

Then, the guy grabbed the kid by his jacket, at the neck and the lower back, picked him up off the ground, and threw him into the doorway of a store onto the floor (door was open, not through the door). He then walked up to the boy, who was lying on his back, and kicked him at least twice. The store had several people in it.

The woman behind the counter came around and helped the boy up. She appeared to be related to both the kid and guy. They talked while she tried to comfort the crying boy.

Pretty shocking and sad. Makes me wonder what kind of family dynamic is at work there.

what store was this and what sort of action was taken? Do you know if the police came? And, how did you see so much while riding the bus?

But seriously, child abuse happens everywhere, it's ignorant to blame a neighborhood. In fact, from my experience growing up in a poor, largely minority neighborhood is I found that affluent parts of town suffered less from child abuse.

Economics are certainly a predictor in child abuse, as are anxiety (which economics can directly influence,) whether the household is one or two parent, and probably more than anything the sociocultural roots are direct support within the community. Among other things. But child abuse certainly exists in every socioeconomic level.

And if you don't think making little girls wear girls caps and little boys wear boys caps isn't abuse, then.

Another resource for reporting child abuse is the NYS Central Register at 1-800-342-3720.

I'd rather not name the store. If the woman I saw was indeed the proprietor, I dont' think she needs the added punishment of this story getting picked up on Curbed or the like.

Longtimesloper, my bus was at the stop and this all happened very quickly. I was able to verify that the police did show up.
