Help - found orange tabby cat! Needs new home

We noticed a few weeks ago an orange tabby cat, meowing loudly, in the back of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. Several people in the neighborhood have been taking turns putting out food for the friendly kitty. Today, I put out some food and as I watched the kitty gobble it up, someone who works at the BSfEC came out and took the food away saying the cat and the food were bringing vermin into the yard. He told me he called CACC and they won't take the cat unless it's in a carrier and he apparently doesn't want to put in that effort. (probably a good thing anyway - I don't know how well a grown cat would fare at CACC) I understand his point about the food but it's obviously upsetting to see food taken away from a clearly hungry and seemingly sweet cat. I would be happy to trap the cat in one of our carriers and bring her to a shelter but not sure if she belongs to someone...any suggestions as to the next best step? We have our hands full already with 2 kitties but I would like to see this cat get some help!

  • He didn't let the cat eat the food after it already started and is hungry? What a jerk. And I would think the cat will keep vermin away, not bring them to the yard. I'm guessing the cat eats all of the food leaving an empty bowl, so how would that encourage rodents?
    Talk about ethical culture....
  • I agree w/ sage dog!

Two ways to help find the owner (if there is one) are: Call 311, where you can report a found cat to Animal Care & Control, which keeps a database of lost/found animals. Also try posting "Found Cat" flyers around the neighborhood.

If you can't find an owner, there are a number of suggestions about what to do on the slope street cats website at

  • I heard about this cat today from a customer but couldn't go out to check on him since I was at work. Supposedly the cat is being fed by a few people but no one can take him, he's friendly and obviously a former house cat. Kensington Kitties is going to swing by tomorrow and pick him up.

As for the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, the jerk who took away the cats food needs to take another look at the "Eight Commitments of Ethical Culture". Specifically these:
    1. Ethics is central.

The most central human issue in our lives involves creating a more humane environment.

    6. Self-reflection and our social nature require us to shape a more humane world.
  • Yay! I stopped by a few times today and didn't see the kitty but I hope kensington kitties will be able to get him/her tomorrow. I completely agree about the poor attitude of this man and the Brooklyn society for "Ethical" Culture. Very disappointing. The more I think about this guy and the fact that he walked off with the cat food while the cat was eating, the more fired up I get. I may have to go say something to them. And sage dog, I thought the same thing about vermin - don't cats keep them away?! Thank you, caseopele, for the update.
  • Kensington Kitties went by yesterday but the cat was too skittish for them to pick up. marleyandmilly, could you trap the cat and they'll take him? if so, PM me and I'll give you their number.
  • I noticed Slope Street cats had put out signs this morning. I will try to trap him/her tonight - just need to figure out how to get him to KK...
  • This cat is one lucky kitty, he has a bunch of people looking out for him. A friend who works with Slope Street Cats is going to trap him, she said she saw another cat nearby too. They're doing a big TNR project this week so he's going to be taken care of. She needs to be the only feeder though so he'll get used to her and be easier to trap. Thanks so much, marleyandmilly. He really is a lucky boy to have wonderful people like you watching over him!
  • Yay, well I hope they can trap them soon and find wonderful new homes for them. I know the orange cat seemed friendly so I am sure they will make great pets. Please keep me posted if I need to do anything. Thanks for keeping me updated!
  • A kind soul from Park Slope brought this cat into her home. The cat was already neutered so he was more than likely dumped. He is available for adoption. Please PM me if you are anyone that you know would be interested in adopting. They are calling him Chutney and he is a really wonderful little guy. I will ask the foster to post some photos.
