Finding an apt in Gowanus? — Brooklynian

Finding an apt in Gowanus?

Ok - not that anybody reads this forum...but still.

I'm looking for a new apartment, or a room in an apartment. I would LOVE more than anything for this new apartment to be in Gowanus. The more industrial the better.

Problem is - there don't seem to be any damn places available or looking for roommates. Is there some secret Gowanus apartment list I can get on or see? Should I just wander around the neighborhood looking for signs on lampposts or bulletin boards?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • I know during my recent apartment search I stumbled across more than one listing for a place in "Park Slope" that turned out to be Gowanus - which I'd sometimes only learn after calling the broker/owner. So maybe scout out some of those "park slope" craigslist listings. You might even be able to talk the person down some on money since it isn't actually park slope - the landlord doesn't have to know that you actually prefer it industrial!
  • go to craigslist.
search on "park slope"( in quotes ) then plug in 2 BR under $2000.
(or some other kinda unreasonable expectation)
No doubt you will get listings that purport to be the slope but are actually gowanus greenwood prospect hts sunset pk or what have you.

despite this sounding like a jest, im not kidding.
if you truly want to live in gowanus, you are at least as likely to find it being called "park slope".or "park slope west" as you are gowanus.

also ,using quotes ,try individual search on
    "third av" , "3rd av"
    "fourth av" "4th av"

  • Thanks guys.

Garfunky - I've been trying similar things. Haven't done the avenue searches though. I've been searching through Carroll Gardens & Park Slope listings though trying to read between the lines. Appreciate the help!
  • make sure to use the quotes on the CL search.
    also maybe try
    "bond"
    "nevins"
    "douglass"
    "butler"
    "denton"
    "whitwell"

the quote thing with multiple terms ought to really reduce your time searching.
ie simultaneously search on both "third av" and "park slope"
