  • hitokiri: I have both Tivo HD and a cable box and can switch between the two - you can't run a cable box through Tivo HD, it only uses cards. But the thread that SouthSlopeSuit linked indicates that TWC is only offering HD on Demand on a newer box (by choice, not by capability) so if that's the case, I'll need to get the newer box. Or wait until it's actually offered in my neighborhood.
  • Just got off the phone with a TWC rep - he said that 700 is available in Brooklyn and everyone should be able to get it (although it's only in HD if you have an HD box). Sure enough, 700 comes on our non-HD box (hadn't tried it before because it's not HD), but we're not getting it on our HD boxes. He said sometimes by sending a signal it helps but in our case it didn't so we need a service call. So, fellow TWC Brooklyn HD customers, we are supposed to have channel 700 and if we don't get it, TWC will fix the problem for us.
  • Funny - I just checked when I got home. I have it on the box in the bedroom but not on the box in the living room which is an older box. Not sure what's going on but I will probably swap out the older box this weekend and see if that works.
  • I've got it... it rolled out in Brooklyn about 2 months ago.

Here's the Brooklyn/Queens HD On Demand movie lineup:

  • In mid-september TWC announced channel changes effective September 18. The announcement does not appear to be available on their website any longer, but here is the text:

    "Effective September 18th:

We will reposition Specials on Demand from ch. 1001 to 1009, Kids on Demand from ch. 1003 to 1047, Kids Preschool on Demand from ch. 1004 to 1048, Entertainment on Demand from ch. 1005 to 1012, Lifestyle on Demand from ch. 1006 to 1013, Cutting Edge on Demand from ch. 1007 to 1021. We will also launch The Africa Channel on ch. 87, Jewish Life TV on ch. 120, Filmy, an international premium service, on ch. 562, History en Español on ch. 838, and LATV on ch. 166 in Basic service requiring and viewable only with a digital converter.

In Brooklyn/Queens: we will launch Virtual Video Store on channels 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, and 1006. Virtual Video Store will only be available on the following set-top boxes: Samsung HD3050, Scientific-Atlanta 4250 HDC, and Scientific-Atlanta 8300 HDC. The launches of Virtual Video Store in Manhattan and Mount Vernon have been postponed.

We will also launch HD MOD onto ch. 700, HD Showcase on Demand on ch. 699, and MHD (720) will also be renamed Palladia. Toon Disney HD will move from ch. 787 (DTV) to 760(Standard). HD MOD and HD Showcase on Demand are viewable only on Samsung HD3050, Scientific-Atlanta 4250 HDC, and Scientific-Atlanta 8300 HDC set-top boxes.

In Manhattan and Brooklyn/Queens: CSPAN on ch. 147, CSPAN2 on ch. 148, and CSPAN 3 on ch. 149 will change from DTV to Basic service requiring and viewable only with a digital converter. CSPAN 2 will no longer be available on ch. 60. Toon Disney will be available in Standard Service ch. 60, moving from DTV ch. 108."

I've bolded the relevant portion regarding which boxes will be getting the on-demand HD.... makes no sense, I know, but nonetheless that's what they've done. Read somewhere that this was a conscious decision as part of the process of discontinuing the 8300HD boxes.

The 8300HD boxes run software that TW has to pay royalties on - the 8300HDC boxes run software that TW developed in-house. Eventually all boxes will be 'upgraded' to the (really sucky) in-house software.

Wow.. thats weird. Never heard it working out like that.

I wonder if it's a way to conserve bandwidth for the costumers.

Did you try restarting your box? (remove the power cord for 2 min and do a reboot)
  • Yep - did the reboot twice and nada. It's not a big deal to just go to the TW store on 5th Avenue and swap out the box though. No need to make an appointment for that.
  • Had TWC cable for about two years now in PS, and we've had numerous problems with the HD part (not to mention the rest of their "service," but I won't go into that now...). As has been mentioned, the HD channels tend to either not be available at all (blank gray screen), or there is breakup enough to render them useless. It's gotten to the point where we've resorted to DVRing all our shows on the non-HD channels for fear of going to watch something and having it completely unwatchable.

I'd also say that about half the Sundays during this NFL season I've had to watch games on the non-HD channels for the same reason. But what can you do...
  • It's odd, but we haven't had any of those problems with HD service on Time Warner cable. We've had a different problem, and that only occasionally: the audio will sometimes skip in and out on a particular HD channel. If we switch channels a few times, it usually comes back OK.

Our HD picture is always gorgeous.
  • Glad there is such an energetic discussion after Slappy failed to kill the thread right away.

Got my TV and box on Tuesday and so far we are loving it! I am impressed with the amount of channels available and it looks beyootiful!

Still kicking it around...there's no Bravo HD right? Would love to see Top Chef. Love Food Network HD you can almost taste the stuff.
  • I hate to sound lame.

But "Feasting on Asphalt" on Food Network HD was one of my favorite things ever
  • @Testiculon - no Bravo HD yet but they claim they are adding 100 additional HD channels shortly so hopefully Bravo will be one of them. I'd love me some HD Top Chef as well.
  • HD Shear Genius.. Now THAT would be a sight to behold. Jaclyn Smith's true age would finally be revealed.

Well, in his defense, you changed your question completely a few posts after ;)

    Enjoy your HD though!

As a sidenote- I saw Tabatha (ie Tabatha's Salon Takeover) at The Gate with her girlfriend a few weeks ago and she looks really, reeeeally bad. They must do something amazing to her face to make her look that good on tv.
