Loud, crappy music on Sterling
Someone has been playing crappy reggae (or reggae-style music) at a loud volume on, I think, Sterling Place the past couple of days. I can hear it clearly from Park Place, across the way, and the other night it went till 1 AM .Maybe it's the same terrible people who let their dog bark constantly. Anyone have an idea what address this might be so I can file a complaint? I don't usually like to be such a curmudgeon all the time, but both the music and the dog really bother me.

You sound like a nice guy. If you get the address, post it and I'll call 311 too. Maybe some other people will too. The more calls the better. Use your cell phone of course.

Snitching is not a Brooklyn thing, but Reggae is. You should have stayed in Ohio, how long have you lived in New York; do not count your years at NYU.

Worldwide Trader:
Am I to understand that in your world, complaining about rude, selfish behavior such as blasting your music so loud that it disturbs your neighbors is inappropriate, but posting complaints about a sub-par soy mocha latte (as you did on this same board yesterday) is OK?worldwide trader wrote: Heights Coffee Lounge 335 Flatbush Avenue @ 7th Avenue, of course, this place makes a dog of a soy mocha latte. Pure crap!!! They really p$%*ed me off, it can be no less than catastrophic what was done to my drink of choice on a cold tuesday. You have to hand it to them, though: they never doe anything halfway. On the one hand, you can't say that the atmospher isn't nice.
So according to you, snitching is not a Brooklyn thing, but uncivil behavior, the original street cred drink - the soy mocha latte, and bad spelling are Brooklyn things. For the record, I've lived in NY for all of my 44 years, and in Brooklyn for the last 20, and I see no reason not to expect basic courtesy from one's neighbors. -
+1 for jon cane

No wonder you call yourself Joncane, you old piker!!!

These responses are so predictable. And so boring. -
yea worldwide trader, honestly, your gonna bust on this guy because he can't enjoy himself in his apt do to loud music on a weeknight going until 1am and meanwhile you make posts online regarding a not so tasty soy mocha latte. lol. you must be a TRUE New Yorker....you put up with loud music late and night and things that truly disturb your enjoyment of living yet a bad soy latte deserves some blogging! oh yea!

Who is Bill Ackman?
Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has been on CNBC a lot. Is he lobbying to his would-be choice for president, Barack Obama? Does he want to replace Hank Paulson?
Just as he offered up unsolicited advice with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and yesterday Target, Bill Ackman is getting his two cents in on TARP. Why not a public-private partnership, he asks? Just like the roads in this country...
And back to that crappy Soy Mocha Latte, you drink and you will understand. Damn Heights Coffee. -
i don't know the address but i can vouch for axel's take. i like a lot of reggae, but most of what they're playing is schlock, it's loud enough that i can hear every word inside with all the windows closed and they've been at it if not every day then almost. i too will be happy to call 311 if someone figures out the address.

location Fool! I had friends calling from LA once for a noise complaint. My father called from upstate NY to complain about the heat in my building. Oh yeah, it's important to leave your name and number. They tend to dismiss lesser complaints like this without a call back number. They do nothing with the info, sometimes a cop calls back to verify addresses. -

Please explain to me the connection between Bill Ackman, soy mocha lattes, and people playing loud music on Sterling Place.
...Unless you are insinuating that Bill Ackman is actually holed up in an apartment and blasting Bob Marley because he drank some bad soy? -
Do you have to have the exact address? Can you say there's loud music on Sterling between whatever the streets are? Or will the police not show up to figure out the source?

I've been calling in noise complaints since April 0f '07 on some jerks who chronically blast loud DJ quality music from the back yard on the next block, You need to call the address into 311, get the complaint # & log it somewhere and then call the local precinct in ~ 1 hour if the noise is still going on. The more people you can get to call in the better.
IMHO occasional noise from a neighbors house esp, during the warm weather months is just life in the big city but when it becomes a chronic problem that goes on at loud volumes late into the night & early AM, well that's a whole other ballgame. The difference is occasional vs chronic.
A few other things I have done was to contact both the mayor & police commissioner's offices via the nyc.gov website. That at least got me a contact with the Lt. in charge of Quality of Life issues at the precinct and a few letters of concern from the precinct's CO. You can also try contacting your local city & state pols for help but outside of my state assemblyman getting back to me that didn't produce a big response. Also I believe all the precincts have monthly open meetings for their communities to discuss local concerns of this type.
As its been reported numerous times in the media that noise complaints are the biggest reasons why people call 311, I don't know why they don't make it a higher priority in all areas of the city. Nobody these days warns you before they write you a ticket for parking or traffic issues so the police response should be as automatic when responding to noise complaints. Confiscation of the audio equipment would also be an effective response to these chronic noise issues.
If I were king I would also disconnect their electric service. :-) -

What if, during your complaining, you also work in how awful the soy mocha lattes are at Heights Coffee? Would that be more acceptable?
Um, apparently I'm not the only one to be thinking this. -
Is it close to the "reported" This Old House house? That would be hilarious if its still going on when they start filming. (Unlikely, but I love the possibilities)

loud music during the day for a couple hours or say on july 4th etc is fine by me as is loud music to celebrate things.. like next tuesday night!
but playing loud music at 1am is not acceptable no matter how you cut it
people (who aren't going to NYU) have to work in the morning and sometimes like to get a good night of sleep! -

Don't even bother buddy, the decline is already irreversible. They won't be happy until the "crappy" (read "black") music has vanished, and all of Crown Heights looks like this (btw this video sadly was actually taken in Crown Heights):

Oh, "crappy" means black now. Shit. I guess all those times I referred to crappy weather, I actually meant "black" weather. All those crappy movies were just black movies, and George W. Bush is a black president.
Obamanut, do you know any linguistics experts in the area (Crown Heights only, please) who could help me relearn how to speak and write? This way, next time someone's playing loud music at 1 AM, I can avoid making such an embarrassing faux pas on a message board. This is going to be a long, painful process, but I figure you're just the guy to help me out.
Howdy, Stranger!
