Ever donated a car? — Brooklynian

Ever donated a car?

I'm thinking about donating my car. Has anyone done this? If so, was it a good experience, would you recommend a specific charity?

  • You'd be better off selling it yourself and donating the cash if your wanting to be charitable. The charity will prolly end up with more money and you will know exactly what you can claim if it is for tax purposes.

  • Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I don't think anybody would buy my car. Not that it doesn't run or is a huge piece of shit - its only a wee bit shitty and not very cool.
  • now my car is a piece of shit.this you know.. i need to donate it ASAP

No, you just don't know what you're doing!! :D

Did you get it fixed yet?
  • I think that the charities end up selling them for the scrap metal, which is why they don't care if they run or not. There is a reason why people have been stealing sewer access point covers. The charity should give you a receipt for the donation, which is probably roughly equivalent to what the scrap metal dealer gives them.
  • Unless the regs have changed since I tried to donate my car last year, i believe you only get a $500 deduction...I guess how much sense that makes for you depends on the quality of your car and your other options. Of course I'm no expert so I suggest you still check into the process more thoroughly. Best of luck.
