In search of a church — Brooklynian

In search of a church

Hi,
I'm a devout, left-of-center Christian looking for a church. Ideally, I'd love to find one that's active in the community & has a few young people (20s-30s). I don't necessarily need a church that's as liberal as I am, but I'm not comfortable hearing sermons about how being gay is wrong. If you love your church, please tell me about it!

Thank you, neighbors -

  • I think most of the churchs in this area are pretty liberal. The church numbers have dwindled down (at least in the English speaking masses) but the Spanish masses are usually standing room only.

I only know of the Catholic churchs - two of which are: St. Josephs on Pacific between Underhill and Vanderbilt (in my opinion one of the most beautiful interiors of a church in NYC) and St. Theresa de Avilar on Classon (off of Sterling).

There is another church, St. Agnes, on Degraw and Hoyt Street. This is the church that my family grew up in and is also quite beautiful. This church used to have quite a bit of groups. I moved from there quite some time ago so I am not sure what they have to offer there anymore.

you should check out the Metropolitan Community Church in Manhattan. Its a gay christian church with one of the most amazing ministries I have ever known. Thats where this gay girl goes when she needs some liberal, active, practice-what-you-preach ministry.
  • There's a lefty church in Park Slope. Methodists? I don't remember.

I think it's near 9th St, on Sixth Ave, but I'm totally spacing on the name. They used to have a ton of liberation theology forums and such . . .
  • Another one if you wanted to travel is the Unitarian Universalist Congregation which meets in Brooklyn Heights. This is very progressive group who welcome any and all congregants. Here is their website.

sorry to be so useless with the details. I've been in Brooklyn long enough to know alot, but not exactly remember it . .

the same one we talked about?

Oh, about the church. If you want to travel, Grace Church in New York, at broadway and 10th street, was great growing up.
  • Not necessarily Christian (although some members are), the Quaker Meetinghouse is on Schermerhorn Street between Smith and Boerum and silent Meeting starts on Sunday at 11am. It last an hour and there's coffee and refreshments afterwards. Lots of folks there are gay. Many are young. PM me if you want more data.
