Alternate side street parking, street sweeping in GWH
Fwding an e-mail from one of the news groups I belong to. Thoughts from folks?
Rainy greetings to all,
I wanted to drop a note about a situation that Mic and I have been working on recently, via the CCGH and my role as a CB7 member. basically two topics at hand: street cleaning and alternate side street parking.
As many of the longer standing folks in the neighborhood know, keeping the streets clean in the proximity of Green-Wood Cemetery (not just adjacent, but side streets as well), particularly 23rd Street, has been a challenge at times. Over the past few years we have made complaints via 3-1-1 and CB7 when we have felt the street clean up, whether it be garbage pick-up or street sweeping, was less than adequate.
This is compounded by the amount of construction in the area and the increase of cars on the street, both from residents and those who "park and ride" on their way to the 25th St. R train.
Most recently, this fall's leaves have proven to be a huge issue with street cleaning on alternate side of the street parking days. The many holiday suspensions have not helped and have compounded the amount of leaves in the gutters, thus harder for the DSNY sweepers to pick up.
After several 3-1-1 complaints, I have been working with Supervisor Smith at BK7 about improving clean up. All excuses from DSNY aside, they have been trying to do a better job this past month...which leads me to my other topic.
it is extremely important that folks with cars in the area are diligent on moving their cars on alternate side parking days (on 23rd St. Wed/Thurs 9:30am-11:00am btwn 6th and 7th Aves). When cars are not moved either in time for the sweeper or not at all, it makes it very hard for DSNY to do their job, and for Mic and I to lobby DSNY to do a better job!
While I do realize parking has become tight (being a car owner myself), any and all improvements would be appreciates, whether it be moving your car the day before, the morning of and even double parking (and funny enough, while "not legal" technically, starting 10 mins before actually gets most blocks a "pre-broom" before the actual sweeping). And I am also very aware of the other side of this issue, tickets from double parking after the cut off time for alternate side parking (having received a $125 ticket for being THREE MINUTES past 11:00am).
Anyway, we are asking the community to work with us and DSNY to make our area of Greenwood Heights as clean and tidy as possible, starting with our streets.
I have been approached about a neighborhood clean up day in the spring, but let's take one step at a time.
Comments and thoughts are encouraged and appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Aaron
