Personal Trainers at Body Reserve
So I started on my New Year's resolution early and joined Body Reserve - the gym on 5th Avenue and Union. My problem is that I am in lousy shape and I could use some pointers from a trained professional to help me reach my goals. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good trainer that won't make fun of an almost middle age and out of shape man?

I heard the trainers at Body Reserve are pretty good, although I personally never used them (I use trainers from another gym, but go to Body Reserve for my Cardio). If you want a good trainer for guys, I can give you someone's name (my husband uses him, and my husband wasn't the fittest guy when he started training). His training studio is a bit farther away from Union and 5th ave though if you don't mind taking a train for 2 stops (it is on 5th Ave and Prospect). PM me if you would like his information.

Talk to Butch that works there... He's as honest as they come and will steer you to a good trainer.

Yeah Butch can help you out. I know Susan is a really good trainer at the Body Reserve but there are also a few guys that Butch will know. Good luck.

If you can, spy on trainers working with other people who are in the same condition as you.

I agree with Raw....I go to NYSC, but when I did training I made sure I watched the various trainers....and also got to know them (it helps to get along with them when they're pushing you to the limit :-) )

Just my $.02 (and worth every nickel) from someone who has worked in the field as a trainer, and manager for 20+ years. It's not unreasonable or inappropriate to ask a trainer's credentials. Don't settle for "certified" as there are countless certifying bodies, including some that are just in-house organizations within large gyms. Look for American College of Sports Medicine certification. NSCA and ACE are also respectable. Find out if the trainer has a degree in exercise science or a related field. Just because they look impressive or have an impressive athletic resume, does not make them qualified to help you meet your specific goals, nor does the fact that they train someone who looks good.
BTW, I have no idea about the trainers at BR, so my post is not meant as a reflection on them in one way or another.
Best of luck with your fitness goals. -
Thanks everyone for the good advice. I think I'll talk to Butch. He does seem like a good guy.

I wouldn't use Melanie. She's okay but not worth the money.

Please lobby them to ease up on the techno music in '09.

I am a member of Body Reserve and have been working out there with trainer Christine Mackin. She is excellent.
