pet-friendly ice melting stuff-where?
I heard folks in the park talking about a de-icing product that is more enviro/pet-friendly than the common salts and such.
What are the brand names and where have you actually seen them in a store around here?
Thanks!
For those who don't know, there are several reasons to avoid salts. Lots of them corrode concrete, damage plants and floors. The cold temps and ice cause much more chafing and cuts to pets' foot pads than average and salts and de-icers can irritate this and even lead to infection (so I am told). Also, when the pets clean their feet they ingest these products and that can be very bad for the pet.
I'm sure there are more reasons, but these are just a few for anyone curious.

We use Safe Paws which we order from JB Pet Wholesale (jbpet.com). It's completely safe and non-abrasive to paws and it melts the ice BETTER than any other product on the market! We were able to use it on our newly repaved sidewalk because it's salt free. It's on back order currently but JB said it will reappear on their website on January 20th (although it can probably be pre-ordered now).

I got one with a husky on the bag (don't recall the brand) at Leopoldi's Hardware, 5th Ave near 8th St.
-
They also sell it at Tarzian on 7th Ave - I think it was $20 a bag.
-
Sean Casey Animal Resue--and they deliver! 718-436-5163

It was indeed $20 per 8-lb container at Tarzian, whereas the regular ice melting stuff was only $10 per 8-lb container.
-
Tarizan has some kinda crayzee markup.
I think it was $14 at Leopoldi's
The bag was pretty big...
and doesn't give the poor beasts hot foot. -
Thanks folks! Hopefully I'll pick some up tomorrow--looks like it might come in handy this week if we're too lazy to shovel or it's just too cold to bust up the ice.

Just bust up the ice. You'll avoid using any sorts of chem that way.
-
everything costs more at tarzian. a lot more.
