  • Go to DHCR at 55 Hanson Pl, behind Atlantic Mall, bring your lease and ID.

You can then get a print of of your rent history to see if you initial rent was fair/legal.
  • I want to find out if my rent stabilized rent is actually what it should be or inflated somehow. Can those people tell me too?
  • BrooklynLeather-- I'm not sure if someone has answered this already, but there is a lot of info you can find out from DHCR. If your current rent is inflated, you might not be able to get that information directly from DHCR, but gathering as much information as you can might help you figure it out. If you are a new tenant for example and your landlord hasn't provided you with the rider that is supposed to accompany your lease, you can file paperwork with the DHCR which will force your landlord to provide the rider. That rider shows how your rent was calculated and explains increases (vacancy increases, improvements, etc.) If for example, you could prove that your landlord was charging for improvements that were never made, then the information on the rider could be useful to you. You can also get info on building wide rent-reduction orders etc.

Getting a printout of your rent history is always a good idea, and DHCR is where to go to get it. You can call DHCR @ (718)739-6400 if you can't get down there too. I can't remember exactly what they ask for, probably a copy of the lease which you mail in, but you can get your rent history without going down to their office.
