Cool, cheap place for a wedding? — Brooklynian

Cool, cheap place for a wedding?

We need an indoor venue for a wedding of about 120 people. Cool places include Galapagos ($16,000!) or the Boathouse (similar amount of money). We're hoping for a mellow wedding, non-catered (maybe some Vietnamese sandwiches or potluck) in a nice Brooklyn space that costs a lot less than that. So far: impossible. Help!

I had my wedding at the Waterfront Museum in Red Hook. It's a original barge from the early 1900s' and you have the entire barge, plus the pier. We had an August evening wedding and it was incredible. Cheap and the people were so helpful. Our caterer was also from Red Hook - Tini Wine Bar. Monica's food was incredible and at a decent cost. She will handle food, beverages, flowers, linens, tables & chairs. I was very happy.

  • Alas, waterfront museum no longer holds weddings!
  • Uh... I am also in the same boat, pun entirely intended. I am hoping to keep it between 70-90 people, and vegetarian. It will be in January of 09, so maybe I can ride out the economy for a while until prices get back to sane levels. I don't want to spend more than $15,000.00 total. I had no idea Galapgos would be so expensive!

I sometimes think that the only wedding we can afford will be exactly the type that would piss off every member of the family, so we might as well elope and piss them off without spending the money!
