Kitten adoption - recommendations? — Brooklynian

Kitten adoption - recommendations?

My gf and I just had a bad experience with an adoption experience tonight.

Seems the volunteer for this organization was a bit loopy. We thought so from the start, but figured since we saw and held the kitten and the paperwork was approved, everything was cool.

It was only on a last minute whim of hers that things went down the shitter.

Anyway, while we wold like to do a good thing and donate, I am sort of disenchanted with the whole concept. Can anyone recommend a good place to adopt a kitten (or does anyone have a new litter?)

This would be our second cat. Current one is 1 1/2yrs old and loads of fun :)

  • thanks.

i hope i dont go through what i had to go through these past few days.
  • animal care and control center in brooklyn - got three of my cats there - they are extremely friendly there and everything has always been a pleasant process - plus the kitties there really need your help
  • Subject: Adopting a kitten

I adopted 3 kittens a couple of years ago. I contacted several rescue orgs, and visited Animal Care & Control, the ASPCA, Bidawee, etc.

The easiest thing to do is to visit http://www.petfinder.org. Many organizations (including the ones I mentioned above) post pictures & info on available kittens there, and then you can go see them.

Consider adopting a pair of kittens vs one.. you'll never regret it!

    Hope this helps

to make a long story short, a "volunteer" for a rescue center went back on a deal with had for 3 days using a poor excuse. We worked our Sunday around to be home to have the kitten dropped off, had the paperwork done and got a new smaller litterbox and kitten food. Then she says she felt bad for the cat because it was crying alone in a cage all day while she was out doing a community event and wanted us to wait another week. I smelled BS, so I kept asking and it turns out..and this is what she said "You know, I just volunteer and I'm tired" (this was after she called and asked for my address and directions AND the time and date were agreed upon since friday). So obviously it wasnt about the cat, but it was about her being tired.

So I didnt like the way she did business and I refused to donate to that specific org due to her and told her to keep the cat. Although I didnt want to say it, I had no choice. She was strong arming us into doing it her way and I refuse to be played like that. My girlfriend was/is very upset since we actually saw and held the kitten, but she does agree with me about the lady.

In the end, it was our fault. We knew this lady was "out there" when we first spoke to her, but it did seem like everything was good to go. Goes to show to trust your gut.

She was also saying that *I* was strong arming her... which i dont know how thats possible since she has all the leverage and im stuck at home waiting for a kitten delivery.

Did i just make that short story long? ;p

    edit:

btw, I *think* what she is doing is illegal. I dont know facts though, but dont operations like that ones she works for have to wait until the kitten is 6 months old before they try to sell (adopt) it?
  • The folks who work at good pet stores usually know who has the kittens. Many good hearted folks in the Slope take cats off the street and save them for adoption. Ask at your local pet store who they are.
  • I strongly recommend www.Barbarathecatlady.org - she has been rescuing cats forever...she keeps them in her apartment - they are well cared for and she knows their personalities...check out her website.

wow. that looks great. I will take a look, thx
  • Let me know if you use Barbara...my 2 old guys are from her - Barbara is an incredible woman
  • I'll probably update the thread later down the road. I already emailed Barbara, and she said that the age of the kitten I am looking for is "off season" lol

I wasnt aware there was a season tbh. But I guess she is right. Love is in the air during the spring!
  • My vet sometimes has cats & kittens that people leave there. You might want to call local vets to see if anyone has any. My vet is Prospect Animal Clinic:
