A New WiFi Thread — Brooklynian

A New WiFi Thread

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I was doing some searches about WiFi in the Slope, and since it seems to be anti board-etiquette to resurrect old threads, I figured I'd start a new one.

Occasionally I need to work from home, during the week or on the weekend. My apartment for various reasons is not a good place to concentrate and work, so I need a place with (preferably free) WiFi where I could sit for a few hours.

I don’t care if it’s cool or not. Actually, the ideal place would be some kind of boring office cube or conference room, but a café or diner would be fine too. I used to go to Red Horse but it’s so crowded lately and they started turning off their power outlets on the weekends. Anyone have any other ideas? I’m willing to travel to other parts of Bklyn too. I know about Naidres and Cocoa Bar and neither place was really good for sitting for a few hours.

Thanks…

  • The Tea Lounge on Union has free WiFi, I believe.
  • Most of the coffee shops have it. Gorrilla is my fave.
    The Library has it, right?
  • Does Barns and Nobles have it? On 7th ave.
  • The tea lounge is usually crowded and loud - not really a good place to concentrate I think. But the library is definitely a good idea! I'll have to call them and see if they have WiFi.
  • I am pretty sure it is not free at B&N.
  • terrace bagels in Windsor Slope has it in the cafe section.

also, it is free in prospect park by litchfield villa and the boathouse. maybe not so great now, but in spring and summer it could be nice.
  • Starbucks has free WiFi, if you put you register one of their cash card things.
  • Has Beens charges
  • The library has it, but ..... that place is always crawling with people looking for free internet access. I've tried 5+ times to go to the library to get some work done and rarely found a place to sit, if I did find a place there were no plugs anywhere close, and since they always have whats seems to be 100+ people on their connection, it crawls. I'd steer clear if I were you. They have free wifi at Blue Marble.
  • The wi-fi at Starbucks is "free" if you put cash on a starbucks card and use it at least once a month. Not a big deal if you drink startbucks, but the access is free for only two hours a day. Good if you are just hanging out and want to surf the web, but not really enough to work for an extended period of time.
  • Naidre's
    Perch
    Steinhoff
  • maybe Get Fresh on 5th Ave?

I've seen at least one laptop in there during the day.
  • 12 street bar has wifi, and drinks. and the best burgers
  • and connecticut muffin
  • The Park's Wifi is going away unless they find a new vendor for it.

Southside in South Slope has Wifi and it's not too crowded during the day.

You could also get an aircard, which is like portable Wifi, and work from wherever you want. It's like $60/mo, but it might be worth it.
  • The rabbit hole on the south side of Williamsburg. Nice place, good coffee, tables up front.
  • Brooklyn Bread has it. Pretty quiet place.

Sweet, I didn't know this. Thanks for the tip

As a sidenote, perch is NOT generally quiet...it fills up with kids in the afternoons. Mornings are generally ok.
  • Wow - now I have a lot of new places to check out. Does anyone know any kind of place that's actually more of an office type space rather than cafe? I remember reading once that there's places for work-at-home people to go during the day, that have copy machines, wifi, desks, etc. Of course this wouldn't be free, but I wonder if there is anything like this in Brooklyn.

I too work from home and have longed for an office share, but I have to be on the phone a lot and most of these places want people who won't be talking and disturbing others
  • Obviously not now, but in the summer, there is free wifi in some locations in Prospect Park.

  • connecticut muffin on 7th?
  • dunno. the one on PPW does

Not sure about wifi... but the tables have about a foot diameter... so probably not a really good option for a laptop.

I read in the Times that the vendor providing this Wifi is out of business, and the city hasn't replaced the service, so that may not be the case.
  • Jwire is a great site for this..

  • Heights Coffee on Flatbush
    Gorilla Coffee on 5th
    Brooklyn Museum of Art
    Cafe Sutra on 5th Ave
  • How about a cell phone attached to your laptop? On some of the Verizon phones you can get the VCast VPak for only $15 per month with unlimited data and you can then use the phone as a modem
