I have complaints
Why can't people shovel their sidewalks? Seriously, isn't there a law about this? I just walked by one of those double buildings a block away from where I live and the entire sidewalk in front was just covered with snow and ice-the inside of the yard also. Not one speck had been shoveled. now, this is a large-ish (sp?) building. Are you telling me that no one in there could pick up a shovel? Or, hire someone to come do it? i just don't understand how the people who live in the building (and I am assuming it is a co op building, I know the one directly next to it is) put up with it! Or, how they think it's ok to leave their sidewalk like that for their neighbors to have to walk across!
Secondly, I just came back from Rite Aid on 7th Avenue. Believe me, I did not want to go out in this frigid, frigid cold and it is windy too! And, on top of that, i had to drag the kids out with me. I felt awful for them with the blowing winds and all, i had them all bundled up, but still-it is f'ing cold out there! But, I had to go and had no choice in the matter, needed something a gal can't live without certain times of the month). So, it struck me as odd to see the nanny in front of me with her charges in their strollers screaming while she bough yoohoos, skittles, donuts and other candies. I am going to assume she was out because she absolutely had to be (I never would have went but I had no other choice), and not just to go buy junk food at Rite Aid.
man, did I mention how nasty and cold it is? When is spring? What happened with that darn groundhog anyway???

the damn ebay store on st. marks and flatbush never shovels. Just the little area on the corner but not the sides.

A friend of mine lies in WT...she says they get get fines there...for whatever reason, PS folks don't get fined.

I feel your pain. There's a (newish) building on a corner near me that shovels their narrow "front" but often forgets the twice-as-wide side of the building (where they have...three garage doors opening onto the wide sidewalk). Seems to me that they're forgetting that you shovel not just for the people who live in your building, but for the people who walk by. Add to the picture the fact that it is a few doors down from a medical center where I see lots of feeble looking people going in, and that the street there goes uphill...hope they have an attorney.
Re the nanny...I guess she's the main one who will have to deal with their sugar-high-augmented screams... ack. A yoohoo, donut, and pack of skittles is probably more than half a stroller-age child's daily calorie requirements, no? -
i was thinking she was buying the junk food for herself!
yeah-aren't people supposed to get fines for not shoveling? What happened to that? And, let's say people don't give a fu about the others in their building or people walking by, aren't they concerned that someone will sleep and fall on their unshoveled sidewalks and they will get sued? -
My LL never shovels. He only recently started salting our stairs because the nieighbors had a baby and complained. I WISH he would get fined. But not yet. There's a retirement home slash senior center slash church down the street and they are THE BEST at shoveling and salting. I love them.

they will if you call 311 and complain....
or crack your neck and sue them

i love the fact that Van Brunt doesn't shovel. Seriously, how much could you sue the gov't for if you broke your neck there?

I saw the Dept of Sanitation giving out tickets on President St between 8th and 7th, 3 weeks ago. Park Slopers do get fined. -
I'm in the mood to break a hip. I could use the money.

i notice that alot of the brownstones and such that are for sale sidewalks aren't shoveled...
is it the Real Estate agency's responsbility to make sure that the sidewalks are clear? Or I guess the former owner? -
Call 311.
''The city's Administrative Code requires owners, occupiers and managers of property abutting the public sidewalk to clear the snow from the sidewalk within four hours after the cessation of any snowfall,'' Ms. Reuter said, adding that shoveling can wait until the next morning if the snow stops falling between 9 P.M. and 7 A.M. -

I was just going to say that...WTF? You're the GOVERNMENT! -
What's the rules if the business is shut? There's a corner spot that is always icy and I busted ass on it the other day. The place was a laundry mat that closed and I see them in there doing construction once in a while. Is the owner of the building responsible for the removal?

Who ever is the owner of the property is responsible for clearing the snow

The owner of a building or house remains the owner even while the house is for sale. It doesn't matter if they are living currently in Timbuktu, they are the owner until they sell to the new owner. It is definitely not a real estate agent's job to shovel the sidewalk of a house they are trying to sell, but they should definitely pass the message on to the owner that it should be taken care of. Doesn't mean the owner will listen.

I hate when people don't shovel, especially corner stores who should do a path to the street but I especially hate the freaking Meat Ad on the right.
Off to cook a steak. -
<-- Also not fond of the meat ad...which no longer seems to be appearing. I credit the Firefox AdBlock Plus?
An amusing (to me) follow-up re the corner building I mentioned that never shovels the side. Today I was walking by and saw two guys standing around, with one of them shoveling finally. Which...was strange because most of the snow/ice finally melted on its own or was trampled away; all that was left was some patchy slush. When returning home I realized that 1) he was just shoveling the space in front of one garage door, and 2) the reason that the guy was attempting to shovel is that the other one wanted to take his beemer SUV out for a spin and apparently luxury rides need absolutely clear sidewalk whereas elderly people on their way to the medical center don't even merit some sprinkled salt...
I gave him a nasty look when he pulled off. I'm sure he was wondering "wtf is that girl's problem." I wondered the same about him. -
Ditto on that meat ad!
Howdy, Stranger!
