LaGuardia!? — Brooklynian

LaGuardia!?

brooklynbound
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I thought I was flying out of JFK, but just saw that I made a huge mistake! I'm flying out of LaGuardia. Any suggestions on getting there with public trans? Thanks!

  • There is a cheep bus somewhere in Manhattan near Grand Central. Anyone know more info?
  • Public transportation to LGA is a major pain in the ass. If you don't want to cab it, I would probably take the express bus out of either Grand Central, Port Authority or Penn Station. That or get yourself on a 7 train to Queens and get out at Junction Blvd. and take a 5 minute cab ride from there. A cab to Laguardia is really the way to go, though.

A cab is also cheaper to LGA than a cab to JFK... I think LGA cab for me is like $30 (south slope)

    NY Airport bus service.

  • I tend to fly early in the morning and in that traffic (6-7am), going from the Grand Army Plaza area to LGA was much faster than to JFK (maybe 20 minutes) with a car service.
  • By the way, it's shameful that NYC doesn't have a better way to get to its closest airport by public transportation. Or a better local airport than LaGuardia.
  • If you're near the F train in Park Slope, you can take that directly to 74th & Roosevelt in Queens and then go upstairs to the bus depot and take the Q33 bus. The train is about 45 minutes from 7th Ave stop and the bus takes about 25-30 minutes depending on traffic. If you would take public transit into Manhattan to catch a bus, it's just as easy to do it on the F train.

You can also catch a livery car on Roosevelt Ave and they'd probably take you the rest of the way for $10.
  • Thanks! What a mistake! Next time, JFK all the way!!
  • Actually, as much as it sucks, LGA is the way to go unless you need a direct flight to a foreign country. JFK kind of sucks too. And it's farther away. Newark might be our best local area airport. Depressing....
  • To LGA: take the 4 or 5 train to 125th St in Manhattan and change for the M60 bus it will drop you right in front of the terminal
  • As an addendum to some of the suggestions already offered, I've done each the following w/success:

Lvg from from Brooklyn, take any train to 74th & Roosevelt, then the Q33 city bus to LaGuardia. I'm on the G line, so it's easy for me, but many trains stop at that station, so it's worth checking out. Other than having to drag your bags upstairs and outside, it's the cheapest route. All you have to do once you get outside is look for signs for the Q33 or ask anybody where to get the bus to LGA.

Lvg from Manhattan where I work, I've taken the bus from either Grand Central or Port Authority. Check out www.nyairportservice.com for schedules, pickup point options, etc. You can buy your tix on line, print and go. The Port Authority pick up point is especially good bcs it provides shelter from inclement weather. It's worth noting you can also get buses to JFK and Newark, too. Even if I'm lvg from Brooklyn, I usually go this route to Newark, as once I'm on the bus, I don't have to think or worrry again until the driver announces my terminal. BTW, I know it's a no-brainer, but pay attention to the driver when he announces terminals, bcs if you space out and miss yours, it's not like he can turn ard and make a special trip back just for you. Depending upon the time of my return flight, I'll sometimes buy a one-way out bus ticket out and take the Q33-->Roosevelt Station route back.

Lvg from Manhattan, I've taken the 2, 3, 4 or 5 to the M60 bus. I tend to favor taking the 2 or 3 to the Columbia U. stop, bcs you stand a better chance of getting a seat than if you get on on 125th--but totally up to you.

If it's a super early red eye flight, which I tend to favor if I'm not taking an afternoon flight from work, I take a car service. I'm paranoid abt missing my flight, so I always leave extra early and am just not going to be out schlepping luggage to the train along deserted streets in pre-dawn hrs. In that case, I take the car service and usually the Q33-->Roosevelt Station route back to help offset the cost of the car to the airport.
  • Ok, so I realize that not everyone flushed with extra cash...especially right now.

However, to take public transportation from Park Slope to LGA is absolutely insane. A car costs $30 and takes 15 - 30 min almost regardless of traffic.

I could not imagine having to take the subway for almost two hours only then to begin your trip. Anyone who would even advise taking the subway is not your friend.

I can understand frugal, but sometimes you get what you pay for.
  • I've done both the Q33 and the M60. The Q33 route took absolutely forever between the train and the bus, but it was easy, I guess. I just felt like I could have gotten to Philly in the same amount of time. The M60 - did not show up for some reason for almost an hour and by the time I got to the airport they wouldn't let me check in, meaning I had to turn right around and go home.

So - if you go for the public transportation route leave ridiculously early (probably goes without saying when the MTA is involved), check-in online just in case, prepare to carry all your bags on the plane (in case you arrive at the airport past the checked baggage window), and bring some entertainment so you don't contemplate hanging yourself with your luggage straps.

Me? I just cab it to LGA now. I'll scrimp and find the money in my budget elsewhere; the savings just isn't worth the stress.
  • I work for a car service. Who needs a ride!

I totally agree. I will dip into my alcohol/food budget to not have to take public transit (I do, however take public transit to newark on a regular basis with no problems thus far.)

It is SO not worth it to schlep all your bags on the train and shit to save $30

Also, you have to take into account the cost for the trip (Subway, Airtrain, etc.)

Especially for two: really, really not worth it.
  • I would walk to Eastern Pkwy, Flatbush Avenue or 7th Avenue depending where you are and grab a yellow.
  • I hate Arecibo! They are very unprofessional and always hang up on me. I've switched to Eastern. They are very courteous and even have lower prices! Guess I'll call them for a ride!! That thirty bucks could have been spent on a nice night on the town on my vacation, but hey, whatyagonnado?

    Thanks everyone!!!
