(the Trout BLT may be the best BLT I've ever had). Lobster rolls are very good -very authentic to the Maine lobster roll, and, yes, very expensive. However the rolls FULL of lobster-meat that bad boy.
Bogota menu rocks. Yes it's always crowded, but the menu astounds. Very traditional Central American food, but there is a lot of creativity there.
Ghenet on 4th is fabulous. IMO its better than the O.G. Ghenet above Chinatown. And quite romantic as well.
I don't think that even the owners of Bogota would claim that what they're doing is 100% authentic, and it's certainly not exclusively central american either.

They got SLAMMED on V-Day. Bigger crowd than even NYE.

I don't know, in the end, if I could compare the BFC roll to a Maine roll. Before by NE trip last year, I'd have called the BFC lobster roll my favorite ever. Now? It's lucky if it makes my top five.

Let's not forget the new ethiopian place that opened up on Fulton and S. Portland. I'm hearing very good things about it. It's BYO still, though. I've got to check that out soon.

Thanks to the great reviews on here I tried this place Sunday night and thought it was amazing. I typically read brooklynian for recs like this but have never posted. This restaurant, though, is worth registering for.
Huge salads and great homemade pasta. The service was lacking even though the place was absolutely EMPTY - hopefully others will discover this place thanks to your reviews!
  • We went yesterday for dinner and it was great as always. I noticed they have a new hostess/waitress type person and she is a bit slow. Luckily for us, the owner and the chef know us by now and they came over and told us the specials, etc.. The great waiter, Nat, that I had spoken about previously is no longer with the. Too bad, i hope they get a great waiter again soon.

But, i am glad that you loved the food. Hubby offered to take me to Blue Ribbon and I actually said I wanted to go to Primo Atto instead because i want to give them the business. I tried a new appy last night, I had the filet mignon wrapped around fresh mozzarella and proscuitto served in a fresh mushroom sauce, it was amazing and HUGE!
  • Yeah, everything we had there was huge. We also brought our three year old (i was nervous bc its such a nice space, but really we were the only three people there) who had a huge plate of penne that they only charged us $6 for, which is much better than the other places we have been to (sette, scottaditto, etc) that basically charge full price.
  • Sidecar is a pretty happening spot too. I have to get to Ghenet!
  • i really liked sidecar when i went a few weeks ago; ghenet not so much (way overpriced and pretty bland i thought, which was a huge disappointment as i love ethiopian food)
  • I love Sidecar. Good burger, friendly owners and nice bartenders (not that I want to run into ApplePants there!)
  • I always thought Sidecar was a bar, is it a restaurant?
  • LongTimeSloper wrote: I always thought Sidecar was a bar, is it a restaurant?
both - although the menu is limited, so I'd consider it a bar first
  • Nice burger there and funny bartenders!

  • Something about Get Fresh seems really sterile to me- I'll admit I've only been in before they started doing a real sit-down campaign, but every time I went in to look around it seemed really...cold? Something just unfriendly about it although the staff has always been nice. I hope they do well, they seem to have a good business model going. I'll have to try dinner sometime...
  • $6 tacos are obscenely priced. And I can get a 1/2 rotisserie chicken for around $6 or less at carneviento. It seems pricey, no?
  • carmen,

now that they've redone the back area, it is much more cozy. and the addition of the tables up front has really helped too. the staff there are about the friendliest i've ever encountered and the chef/owner? has come to chat us up every time.

they are going to start growing all their herbs for the food out back once the nice weather hits.

i HIGHLY recommend this place. i know i sound like a shill for it, but it's just great, fresh, well prepared food.

    go try it.
  • mamacita,

i haven't had the tacos, but how do we know if they are overpriced if you don't know how large/how many you get...?

i didn't think $6 for an appetizer sounded crazy. it's not sunset park prices, but certainly not outrageous.

If you only get one for $6 yeah that's pretty crazy. but like you said, not sure how many you get. Tacos Nuevo Mex. is in PS and has solid tacos for cheap. Though under rated, Calexico has overstuffed tacos for like 2.50? or $2?
  • You seem to be madly in love with this place belzjm, but, i agree with the above, i just don't feel the love for it. i went in there a few times before they had this 'cafe' and found their food extremely overpriced and very small portions. Now that they have a cafe, it just doesn't entice me.
  • fair enough, longtimesloper.

and i agree with you. i wanted to love the place when it first opened. i went a couple times to try some of their prepared meals and while they were good, i found them extremely expensive. i didn't set foot in there for months.

and then i happened upon it again after the change and it's like a whole new place. they seem to have gotten a better feel for what's going to work if they are going to stay alive.

i have to restate that they sell stumptown coffee also. i posted on another thread about this, because stumptown is a coffee place which started in portland, oregon and is probably some of the best coffee you can get (new york has HORRIBLE coffee!) so to find that they sell stumptown was just icing on the cake.

i understand the lack of love for the place when it first opened (although they did do a great job on the space) but i think it's worth a shot in this new incarnation.

if you try this place, i'll try primo atto! ;-)
  • LOL! Well, hmm, you are saying the portions are better now and so are the prices? I might have to try it for brunch, I will let you know if we do!
