Opinons on living on Washington Ave

I'm a relative noob to NYC, having only moved here a year and a half ago, and now my husband and I are in need of a two bedroom apartment - which means getting the hell out of our currently overpriced Manhattan neighborhood.

We're putting in an application (not signing a lease yet) for an apartment on Washington Ave between Crown and Carroll. I felt pretty okay about the area the times I've visited, but I wanted to get a feel from others on the ground about what it's really like.

Any intel on that particular area (daytime vs. night time; muggings/robberies; etc.) would be appreciated.
