They just had it at The Good Fork on Van Brunt in Red Hook this eve.

Good Fork is a restaurant, I need a bakery where I can buy a cake-thanks though. Think I will check out Cousin John's, haven't been inside that place in a billion years.

Sweet Melissas? That bakery down on 8th Ave and 12th(?)? -
Do you mean LadyBird Bakery, the place that used to be Little Red hens? Sweet melissa is the pastry shop/restaurant across from 321. Who do you think would have better strawberry shortcake and not break the bank as much, ladyBird or Cousin John's?
-
when you figure this out let us know, im craving now that you said something!
-
the pressing question is: spongecake or biscuit?
-
Ok, here are my strawberry shortcake findings.
I called LadyBird Bakery on 8th Avenue up near 12th Street. they only do Strawberry Shortcake as a special order cake, they need 48 hours notice and a 6 inch cake cost either $28 or $29, I forget. Cousin John's on the other hand, has 3 different sizes of Strawberry Shortcake always in the store and their 6 inch cake cost $18.
So, I headed over to Cousin John's. Once inside the place, all the yummy looking cakes were taking my eye away from the SS cake, then, I saw that they sell certain cakes by the slice!! Boy, was I thrilled!
I ended up buying a slice of what they call Sweet Sixteen cake, which is just like a strawberry shortcake, but, the icing is buttercream as opposed to whipped cream on a traditional strawberry shortcake. I also bought a slice of Oreo cake and 2 slices of their Red Velvet cake (1 for me and 1 for my downstairs neighbor who has been having some rough times lately). Total cost for 4 nice size slices of yummy cake, $12!
I am biting into the Sweet Sixteen cake now and let me tell you, yummy, yummy! Go Carmen, go! -
Yep Cousin John is still reliable for good stuff. When they forst opened it seemed like their prices were so high but over the decades people got accustomed to paying a small fortune for a pie or cake or even a slice of one so now the old standby seems reasonably priced.
-
Ha! I was thinking the same thing veets! I remember being in there many many years ago, probably about 11 years ago now. I was with a friend who wanted to buy a cheesecake and i remember both of us being appalled at the price they wanted! I believe we just walked out.
now, yeah, I find the prices a bit high, but not that much, i guess so many other places in the area have such similar (or higher!) prices nowadays that their prices don't seem bad (though, i still will go to Lopez Bakery for a good chocolate layer cake for $15-Lopez doesn't do things with fruit well though). -

Is that "6 inch" as in "6 inch DIAMETER"?

$30 bucks for a cake that's six inches big?? ](*,)
I've said it before, and God knows I'll say it again, but this neighborhood has officially lost its mind. -
I have not been impressed by Cousin Johns. Ladybird is worth the occasional splurge--their stuff (I get muffins or little tarts) is the best bakery dessert I've ever had. Nothing is close except my Mom's stuff.
What about the sweets shop on 7th and 9th, next to Smiling Pizza? I've never been in since bakery goods are reserved for dire moments when I don't have time for a birthday treat, but it looks good in there. -
i've always been really impressed with nearly everything i've ever tried at cousin john's.
compared to prices for cakes at magnolia bakery and other such places in manhattan, it's quite a bit less expensive. and the selection is diverse on the cake selection. -
Yeah obamanut, that is a cake that is 6 inches in diameter-the price is shocking, no?
Belzjm, i was really happy with my cake!
Carmen, did you go and get some for yourself? -
Make your own. It's easy, better and Steve's has had good strawberries on sale.
-
Yeah, that is not going to happen, LOL
-
For cakes, I imagine that going to neighborhoods where real 'non-novelty' bakeries still exist is probably the best option, e.g., Sunset Park, Bensonhurst, etc. "Your Baker" on 86st in Bay Ridge is one pretty famous one.
Egg Custard King in Chinatown makes awesome fluffy cakes of all varieties for around $15. I've never had a strawberry shortcake, but judging from their mango shortcake, I'm sure it would be superb. -
Yeah, have to agree with you Obamanut (did I just say that????). I would usually do my bakery cake shopping at a bakery in Bay Ridge or Cobble Hill, was just being lazy.
But, glad to know I can just get slices locally. -
There is a bakery on Atlantic Avenue (I think) on the way out to Kennedy airport that is huge... approximately the size of a supermarket. I think it's "Mrs. Maxwell's Bakery"?
Has anyone ever stopped in there? It's very tempting, but since the only time I ever pass it is when I'm on my way out of town (or coming home) I've never stopped in. -

According to Yahoo local, that place has a 5-star rating with 47 votes, so it looks like they are producing some quality stuff.

Anyone remember Ebinger's bakery? That place used to be awesome, with their original blackout cake.
Edit: Sadly, I'm not old enough to have been to the original, but my grandmother always used to bring cakes from the short-lived revival. -

According to my father, the reason why Ebinger's closed was because the workers tried to unionize. Old man Ebinger told them that if they unionized, he would simply shut the doors and go out of business. The workers went ahead with it and the old man kept true to his word. That was the day that Entenmann's became the luckiest bakery on the face of the earth.

I'd believe that. According to some stuff I've read online, the bakery was pretty shitty to minority groups too.
But they made some delicious cake. -
I know it's not in Brooklyn but...Veniero's in Manhattan on 11 street between 1st and 2nd ave to me... anyway has the BEST strawberry shortcake ever! Plus it's reasonably priced, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Mrs. Maxwell's is great. Buttercream, whipped cream, ice cream cakes and (drumroll please) Strawberry Shortcake. Any size from individual slices to sheet cakes that feed 100+.

I have seen mrs. Maxwell's, but it is a pretty far drive from the Slope for cake.
-
Trust me, its worth it.
