Obama's Speech got me thinkin..... — Brooklynian

Obama's Speech got me thinkin.....

Subject: Obama's Speech got me thinkin.....

So...

I'm thinking of ways to supplement my income in this year of 2009. I work fulltime, but I'm not making a ton of money or anything, and you know, it'd be really nice to have an effin savings account for once in my life.

So, my fellow brooklynians, any get-rich schemes for 2009?

I've thought of distilling my own booze, starting a blog with ads, etc... but I'd be curious what you all come up with.

Thought about escorting, but you know, that good catholic girl inside won't let me!

Thoughts?

  • Only "GOOD GIRL" part time work that comes to mind is the old standby of baby sitting and pet sitting (preferable to the kid sitting).

One of my writer friends is looking into a census taker job - seems to pay well and the hours are very flexible. PROBLEM: no immediate $$$$.
  • And distilling the booze - just follow the grape delivery trucks from 3d avenue up to Bensonhurst - - the market is flooded.
  • Hilarious! Maybe I will, follow the truck that is.

Gah.... Why is it so hard to get a gig these days?? Effin economy!

Yeah. I thought about seeing about brunch-gigs in the slope or like, baby-sitting/pet-sitting. But I like my weekend nights!

    Ugh.
  • tutoring
    freelance writing
freelance whatever you do for a real job

    collect recyclable cans
put all your old crap on ebay
  • fwiw catholic schoolgirl escorts usually charge extra.

you can use that premium to buy yourself an indulgence

  • OooOOoo tutoring. That's an interesting thought.

That article is great. And hey, maybe I could charge extra!!!

I think I've been watching far too much showtime. Secret Diary makes me think all things are possible. Even though, I'm far too chicken.

Ebay! Another great option, altho, i don't really know what i have of value.
  • "Soccer Mom" friend makes a decent coin off eBay.

Goes to book signings - gets the autograph and sells the books on eBay.
    Problem: cash outlay up front

Goes to SallyAm buys stuff and sells on eBay.
She bought a leather skirt for $7 and sold for $50.
Again - cash outlay up front

One man's trash is another man's treasure.
We used to go garbage trawling thru the "money" nabes on bulk day.
Picked the decent stuff up, spiffed it up and tried to sell it (got stuck with 2 chairs but another story). Found a silver-plated tea service in Boro Park and sold it to an antique place in Bay Ridge.
  • Egg donation? BIG chunk o' change in that. $5K to $10K a pop.
    A little painful but lucrative.
  • If you're a good test-taking type person, you could do SAT tutoring for Princeton review or Kaplan. A friend of mine used to much a metric fuckton of money doing that.
  • Three things that will be profitable in the coming months as things get worse.

    Liquor, Loans and Drugs.

Whoring is not profitable in bad times as you will end up using your profits in at least 2 of the above.
  • I'm looking for a good ponzi scheme. My last one was recently shut down.
  • I'm chasing proposal writing gigs.

...desperate non-profits are going to pursue every cent of money available, and don't have the necessary development staff.

The trick: Don't work on a contingency basis.
  • I tried to sell my eggs to two different places and neither of them wanted me but wouldnt say why. Its kind of odd too- I have no health problems, no diseases or history of birth defect with the exception of an aunt having a child with a cleft pallet (which I dont think is even hereditary?) good highschool and college test scores and grades...

maybe they just dont want any more brunettes :(

or they have something against striped hair?

...you could tell them its not genetic.

if I recall I actually looked "normal" during this period. Well, as normal as I can look.
  • Hah - well they most certainly don't want my eggs, you've seen my avatar?

    LOL.

Not that I'm unhealthy, just... right.

I like this Liquor, Loans, and Drugs idea. I feel like I could make that work, somehow or another. And write, Whoring won't pay well in a recession. LOL
  • Ooh ooh..here's an idea:

    dailyheights is gonna be RICH.

  • Focus groups. They pay ok and usually there's some perk.

experimental studies... all those drug control group studies that you see avertised in AM New York?
  • Kidneys. Lungs. Etc. You've got dupes.

Have eight babies (at the same time) on welfare (at the same time) and make a million dollar porno.

    Collect.

Get drunk and fall off a subway platform, causing a train to sever your leg. That is about two and half million. Heck, that pays better than making pornos with eight babies! (not at the same time)
  • Subject: me too

new to this board, not sure if this is improper etiquette, but would prefer to discuss in private. tried to PM you, but just sat in my outbox. drop me a line if you'd like. good luck!

What sucks about most of those for women is that you can't be on any form of hormonal birth control (which I would imagine a large portion of women in their target age range are.) Actually, most of the behavioral ones have the same policy.

A good (male) friend of mine does medical experiments basically for a living. He doesn't live well, but it pays him enough to keep afloat (and so many cool stories!)

    Pimp
  • hehe.....any idea why messages just sit in my outbox, never go to sent?

2 ideas - bike messenger, phone sex. for your own safety, do not combine the 2

bike messengers dont make that much money. At all.
  • supplement being the key word. i know, i've done that job.
  • dammit.

    I'm not into manual labor.

I looked into focus groups, personal shoppers, secret shoppers, so many ideas.

    Bike messengers don't make shit.

However, I bet bike messengers carrying uhhhh supplies of interest do!

    But I might get jacked.

I need some proprietary invention that i can make royalties off of or something.

Phone sex is an interesting concept. I have a friend who does web-shows that gets decent money. But I dunno about spending time on the web getting naked all the time.

Whores on bikes probably make some money too. However, if I was going to slut it up, I'd make him pay for a cab.

    :-) lol
  • For whatever its worth, I can't private message either... WTF is up with that?
  • good luck, i'll check in with you later, and be brainstorming til then

It goes to sent once the person you sent it to reads it.
