need local plumber FAST

edited November -1 in Park Slope
my bathroom sink cracked and there's a giant hole by the drain. i turned off the water but it keeps coming back up.

i need someone asap to a: make sure no water comes back up. b: install a new sink.

the "a" is more important.

anyone know anyone local that they trust in an emergency?

  • Michael Deranieri, great reliable guy, good prices. Came over last week and fixed 2 of my radiators there were leaking badly, cost me $125.00. he also did a major job in the basement of my building providing hook ups for a new washer and drier.

I have never called him on the weekend though, I know he goes away a lot for weekends, good luck!
  • thanks!

i actually just got off the phone with our management guy and the building plumber does freelance (clearly, my sink cracking in half is a me problem, not a building problem...)
  • Potter, If no plumber comes today, go to a hardware store and get a 2 tube set of plumber's resin or whatever they call it. It's a combination of a clay like substance and a hardening agent. Mix both together and squeeze it into the broken part of the sink preferably from the inside and outside. Try to dry the sink as best you can before applying.
  • modsquad, i'm less concerned about the broken sink--which i can replace and in the meantime use the bathtub faucet to brush teeth.

i'm concerned that even though i turned the water off, for a good half hour the tub kept filling. and i had to use a bowl to keep getting the water out... from where? I don't know. but i obviously can't leave the house
  • I though the water was coming out of a faucet that you couldn't turn off completely, in the sink. The putty is a stop gap (literally) so the sink stops leaking. You're saying the water is coming back out of the bathtub drain?
  • no, the sink isn't leaking. water is rising from somewhere into the sink (though it stopped now).
  • This problem is getting bigger. If water is coming up the sink drain without you adding to it it means that the drain stack for that sink is clogged somewhere below you. If you have someone living below you i would see if their sink on that line is also backing up. If it is then the block is below them. Its possible that the pressure of the stack of water has pushed the clog out or someone below has been frantically running a plumbers snake through the drain. Make sure you deny washing any clay down the drain. That would be the first thing management would ask if they knew you were a potter. I saw that movie, I know what goes on in a potter's "studio". :)
  • ok, my studio is in sunset park.

what i think happened is that my hideous sink (shaped like half a clam) sits on a giant ugly pedestal and i believe it's hollow. i *think* that's where the water filling the bowl was coming from, inside the hollow part of the sink. because the sink cracked, and i was using water to plunge, it filled up inside.

it no longer seems to be filling up.
  • 2 problems here. Mechanical and moral. The reason the water was coming up in the sink is because you were trying to clear your slow draining sink with a plumbers helper using water to make a seal against the drain. What was actually happening was the plunger was acting like a pump, instead of pushing down through the clog it was forcing water up into the vent pipe (the vent allows needed air to enter the sewer pipes and is higher than the sink). When you stopped plunging, the water, not being able to go down the drain would run back into the sink because the clog was still there, further down the drain line. Are we bored yet? It is likely you have 2 blockages, one immediately under the sink, inside the pedestal ( it's called a P trap), that would be replaced when he installs the new sink and a blockage further down the drain which would require snaking. No plunging will help that.
If you have a decent relationship with the LL then you can tell him you think there's a blockage elsewhere because you've been trying to unclog it.
If the relationship is adversarial, then I would play dumb, let him install the new sink and watch as it fills up with water again and say "what the Hell?', "It never did that before!"
Some LLs will try to hold the tenant responsible for anything that happens in the apartment. Especially when they try to fix it themselves and destroy a priceless clam shell pedestal sink. Hide the plunger by the way.

Sometimes i love the sound of my typing! :P
  • I am pretty sure that potter owns her apartment.
  • There must be somebody we can blame!
  • we can blame the shitty sink manufacturer.

i clog i can deal with and have someone come snake. now i have to buy a new fucking sink, to fit either on the pedestal or wall mounted in an 18" wide space.

i know, good luck with that.
  • Well, potter, keep his number for when you do need a plumber, he's a good, honest guy.
  • Potter, you should be able to find a sink that fits into 18" space. Visit the Kitchen and Bath store in the corner of Carroll and 5th Ave. They have a whole selection of tiny sinks and vanities that are made for small powder rooms. The key is to find the one you like, ask for the manufacture name and model number, and go to find the exact one on the internet. I have found that the items carried in that store has a 400% mark-up so it is worth a while to do your homework.
  • dracomom, i actually think i found a nice modern one on overstock.com. affordable as well.
