does anyone know anything about the neighborhood at bedford/hawthorne? safe? friendly? convenient?

That is most definitely PLG.

It's a bit of a hike from the Prospect Park station, shorter from Parkside ("which at night is like tales from the darkside....").

I think it's relatively safe, but I can't be sure these days.
