yemen grocery on classon and prospect — Brooklynian

yemen grocery on classon and prospect

is remodeling, which is nice.

BUT

they are replacing their sign, which is my favorite and far to big for me to demand they give to me for my apartment. :(

just FYI and stuff.

  • what's the sign look like?
  • Bodega After School

it's hand-painted, and you can see the brushstrokes. it's fading, and i find it lovely.
  • they are big... based on the bystanders, each looks like 3' x 12'.
  • I observed the remodeling inside (no cold beer this weekend!) but didn't know about the sign. I hope the replacement isn't too ugly.
  • P.S. if the old sign is metal it will likely get sold for scrap. but, yea, nice sign
  • I didn't know about the sign either. That IS sad. I love this place -- Heikel is so nice.
  • I love that place. Before I gave up soda, I was buying 2 liters there every couple of days, and the guys never laugh at me for always paying in quarters.
  • Thank goodness this board keeps me up to date. I live right across from this bodega but don't use it much. Seems like it's been a long winter and haven't ventured out enough. :) Will be happy to see this place get a fix up.

Any clues what is up with the building next to it that is still empty?

That's what's so funny about living in such a dense city. I also live across the street from it, and I'm in there nearly every day. But there are plenty of other places so close by that others are regulars to (bars, restaurants, shops) and I have never been there.
  • Heikel says it'll probably be 2 more weeks before they're all done.

I asked whether he'd seen the redone place at Bergen & Classon and he said he hadn't.

while i know this place is a lot better since it's been redone, and the guys who work there are the nicest ever, everything is always expired or stale! even beverages. it's right across the street from me and i really want to support them, but i don't really trust that anything i buy there will be edible, unfortunately.
  • interesting, abs276. i don't go there too often, but i'd agree that the stuff in there isn't as great as the new decor would suggest.
  • Went in here last night to buy some beer but was surprised to find all of their coolers filled with booze-free liquids.. a stocking guy nearby saw my confusion and told me that they had their license taken away....

I went up to Park Place deli and was actually impressed with their selection.

  • Currently, the best bodega beer is found at Christopher Deli, on Franklin (near the karate dojo) and the bodega on Franklin next to Mayfield.

  • I actually agree regarding Christopher Deli. They fixed the place up and shifted the setup which has improved it greatly. Also, their beer is all labeled individually, which is nice for figuring out price rather than dividing the cost of the six pack (or even wondering if they will complain about buying individual bottles).

  • Good to know! And are the prices on nice-but-not-craft beers (Blue Moon, Sam Adams, etc) the same or better as Bob & Bettys?

  • Hmm, not positive. How much is a 12 oz Sam Adams bottle at Bob and Betty's? Are they cool with splitting up 6 packs? I don't have much experience buying beer at B&B's..

  • I've found that B&B's is far pricier for beer. The bodega on Franklin, near Mayfield, often has well-priced 12-packs. And Compare Foods often buys end-of-season beers and sells them for a song.

  • B&B's is expensive and has a lousy selection. I'll go to Nam's or Pine Tree before I'll shop for beer there. It's no cheaper but at least there's more choices.

  • Prospect Heights Beer Works (Washington between Dean & St Marks) has a pretty wide selection.

  • Beer Works selection is good, but they tend to just have 12 packs. Hauling a 12 pack, plus groceries, is heavy.

They do deliver beer. However, they have something like a 2 case minimum ...which makes me feel and look like I am drinking too much beer, so I don't do that.

The delis seem to know I prefer to pick up a convenient 6 pack and overpay for it.

    ...they are evil.

  • I may or may not have sold some very hard to get Vermont beer to PHBW recently...(commonly noted as the number one IPA)

  • I'd be happy to take it off your hands if you want to cut out the middleman next time.
