A Lesser-Known Jewish Tradition Makes for Timely Eco-Awareness

Come make a big sun-splash on March 29th at a community-wide Solar Fair at Hannah Senesh Community Day School. The event will be the culmination of two months of classroom education, during which students have learned about, and built, solar technologies.

WHAT: SOLAR FAIR

WHEN: Sunday, March 29th, 12-3pm

WHERE: Hannah Senesh Community Day School – 342 Smith Street at 1st Street

WHO: Everyone!


The goal of this curriculum and neighborhood fair is for students and community members to become more knowledgeable about energy consumption and learn ways to make small but positive changes. The Solar Fair and the Celebration of the Sun are part of Birkat Hachama, the blessing of the sun recited by Jews throughout the world every 28 years, at which time, according to the Babylonian Talmud, the sun returns to the position it occupied when it was created.

SOLAR FAIR ACTIVITIES:

· Demonstrations using solar ovens to bake cookies

· Demonstrations of a bike generator

· Solar Panels to charge your cell phone

· An exploration of how all energy on Earth comes from the sun

· Sun-inspired art making

· Pinwheel making

· Sun face painting

· Composting demonstration

· Sunflower planting

· Jewelrymaking using the sun

· Learn about the energy savings of buying food locally

· Wind power and other alternative power vendors and organizations

· Concert by Kindergarteners through 2nd grades

· Food, juice and more!

This event is a fun and educational outing for the whole family. Come on by!
