ceramics classes with local designer
you may know me as a regular poster to the board, i'm also, as my name suggests, a local designer and ceramist.
i'm starting to offer classes/workshops from my private studio in sunset park--for adults or older teenagers.
i'll be offering two kinds of workshops. the most basic, for those wanting to learn how to work in clay, will be a general handbuilding class. open to all levels of expertise, students will learn everything from coil work, slab-building, and everything in between. note: i am not teaching throwing workshops, sorry!
the second workshop is pretty exciting for me: it is a textural tile-making workshop. since i have a fascination with textures in clay--as shown by my knitted patterns and milk bottle logos--students will take everyday objects (shells, leaves, fabric, rubber stamps, beads) and use them to create interesting impressions they'll press into clay they will then cut into tiles.
my favorite part of this workshop, however, is that i'll be providing a special trove of textural items to work with: over the years my dump-digging has yielded me buckets of gorgeous pottery shards. these pieces range from chunks of depression mixing bowls, art-deco vases, arts and crafts bowls, and even a parts of a mccoy planter.
workshops are six 2-3 hour sessions, held in my brooklyn studio, on a yet-to-be chosen weekday evening. for groups, cost is $400 per person (which includes materials, firing fees, and most glazes. we will be using white earthenware and sheer, water-color type glazes). 4 students max per group, but i'll gladly teach several a week; private one-on-one workshops are $500. hopefully this workshop will be successful and if it is, i'll be offering a follow-up teaching how to make press-molded tiles. for more information, email me at [email protected].
