Please help us choose a place to stay in Brooklyn
Dear All,
We are a couple from England, and we are coming to visit New York in September. We are planning to stay for a week, and we are trying to decide on the place to stay in Brooklyn. We have managed to narrow down our search to 4 apartments, but now we really need an insider help to make the final decision. We are torn between Brooklyn Heights and Fort Greene. What we are looking for is a safe area with places to eat and shops, as well as easy metro access to Manhattan. The places in the Heights are located at (1) Schermerton Street; (2) Clarks Street. The places in Fort Greene are located at (1) Lafayette/Fulton Street; (2) Fort Greene Place/Laurence Street. Any advice/guidance/tips will be highy appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Schermerhorn or Clark St. if you want safe and places to eat with great transportation!

Brooklyn Heights over Fort Greene as it's safer, has more places to eat & better transit options. Fort Greene has come a long way, esp. in the safety area, but I still would go with the Heights option esp. for non-native New Yawkers.

Of the two BK Heights choices, I'd say go for the Clark St. one. That area is quieter and a smidgeon safer (though Schermerhorn isn't dangerous per se - Clark St. is just more residential). Schermerhorn is closer to the shops on Atlantic Ave. and Smith St., though - but there are ample breakfast/lunch options near Clark St - and the Smith St./Atlantic Ave. area is an easy walk from Clark for dinner and shopping. And you have the promenade - beautiful views of Manhattan - right by you (at the Clark St. place).
Fort Greene has a lot going for it, too, but as others have stated it is more up and coming. And transit is tons easier from BK Heights than from Ft. Greene. -
I think the Heights is beautiful and would choose that. The promenade alone is completely worth it!
also it's a cheap cab ride or walk to Carroll Gardens (Smith Street) that has great bars, shopping and food. -
Yes, go with brooklyn hights
