i just found this really great blog called here is park slope...lots of really great stories about new things opening around the neighborhood. apparently if you scroll down a bit, there's a cubana cafe (of soho and carroll gardens fame) coming to the space on 6th avenue right near flatbush next to the old video store.

i love the cubana cafe in soho.

nice write up about the scandinavian grace kafe that opened up on president also...

check it out...

  • I haven't looked at that blog in a while - thanks for the reminder.

There's also one of Brooklynian's own on the March 16th entry.
  • The place run by French Canadians also on Smith Street? An absolute abomination, and nothing that has to do with actual Cuban food.

I agree that an authentic upscale Cuban spot in the vein of Cuba on Thompson St. in the village would be great in the 'hood, but our fake latin food quota's already been filled by Playa. We don't need worse.
  • the cuban place on thompson in soho is owned by the same people as the smith street location, i thought?

can't we hope it ends up more like the former...?

The place on Thompson, if I'm not mistaken, is owned by the same folks who own Havana Alma de Cuba on Christopher St. and another spot, which I haven't been to, in Hell's Kitchen.

I think Cuba, on Thompson St., is very good, and their chef used to be executive chef at el Hotel Nacional in La Havana, which definitely gives it a whole lot of cred. I ate the Smith St. Cubana Cafe once and found it ridiculously bland.

I'm sure I'll give this new spot a try. It's a block and a half from me. They have to do something right....
  • I just realized that both Cuba and the Cubana Cafe are on Thompson St.

Cuba is the place between Bleecker and Washington Square Park. Cubana Cafe is more towards the Soho end of things.
