The best Cat Litter Litter box? — Brooklynian

The best Cat Litter Litter box?

MOD

edited November -1 in Brooklyn Pets
I'm running out to finally get a nice, enclosed cat litter box.
Any recs?

Also, what's the best litter for a cat, to absorb odor and clump, but not come all scented in perfume. I hate to smell that fake 'carpet fresh' scent. If you know what I mean.

Help!

  • I hate enclosed litterboxes - or perhaps I should say my cats do. I had one and they refused to use it. So I can't advise you on that part.

For cat litter, my vote goes to World's Best Cat Litter. It's a little expensive but it lasts longer than the cheaper brands, is non-toxic and absorbs the stink. In my experience, if you're diligent about scooping, a large bag can last 2-3 weeks with 2 cats. Probably more if you don't have a bulldog puppy snorfling around in the poo. (Yuck!)
  • well I'm thinking about a hooded litter box because he loves to cover *completely* all his pee or poo. (I can't believe I'm talking about this :x  ) and that ends up spilling litter out of the box. The kitty can't stand his own filth and neither can I

When will you realize that you two were made for each other?
  • He might like it, then. I think that the issue with my cats is that when you have two that are not friendly to each other (which was my case in the beginning), one cat can corner the other outside of the enclosed litter box. We had 3 litterboxes in the beginning (for 2 cats) and they ended up not using the enclosed one, but that was when they were in the midst of their kitteh wars.

When we had the enclosed box, it was just a cheapo brand we got from Target.

I know what you mean about covering the pee/poo completely. Raoul does that - he's very diligent - but Mia leaves her poo exposed to the multitudes. And she won't pee in the litterbox - I have to buy CVS adult pee pads which is rather embarassnig.
  • there's one at acme pet store on vanderbilt that works really well - it's one where the cat enters from the top.

kind of just looks like a storage bin with a lid, but the lid is also designed to catch the litter as the cat exits. it's cool!

You might want to order them from www.cvs.com or www.drugstore.com.
  • Uh, not that I'm ordering those things... I order tampons and hard-to-find beauty products online (just thought I should make that clear!). ;-)
  • I think I'm just going to go with your basic hooded one, that I saw at the 5th ave pet store.

World's Best cat litter looks good, but damn it's pricey. I've used the Arm and Hammer brands and Clean Step. Both are a little to perfumey.
  • i hate all the perfume, too. i find tidycat multiple cats -- the one with the green lid -- is the best combination of something that works well with little to know perfume. arm & hammer unscented is okay but doesn't work as well.

we also put in a couple cups of silicon crystals when we change the litter.

we bought world's best once and weren't that impressed at anything but the price tag.
  • we've been using SWheatscoop & humans & cats alike seem to be happy. It's flushable, so there are no bags, it doesn't have any heavy perfumes & it clumps like...well, something that clumps really really well. $15 at Target for the monster box.

as far as litter boxes go, we took a giant storage bin from Container Store & cut a hole out so the bastards could jump in. Our boy cat Bear pisses straight back & all of the hooded boxes would leak out the back. We tried the one that vanilla mentioned, but our cats are older & refused to jump in. Plus, cats tend to feel more comfortable in a box that's not completely enclosed & has some light. I know I don't like crapping in the bathroom with the lights off. And when they're happy I don't have any gross outside cleanups.
  • We use The World's Best Cat litter and love it. it is pricey but it works great and lasts a long time, totally worth the money
  • Hidden litter boxes at www.petsbestproducts.com
  • we just switched to this litter: http://www.everclean.com/index.html

    it
    is
    awesome

definitely the best ever for not smelling like cat box or like nasty perfume. clumps really well, too.

costs a skotch more than tidy cat, but not that much more. and they have it at acme, so you can get it delivered!
  • I'm sure that's some awesome poop scoop, but that tagline is ridiculous & insulting

I also love the Ever Clean Cat Litter. It works great - way better than other scoopable litters. It is worth every penny.

agreed. why more companies don't remember to run these things by me, i'll never know.
  • The best cat litter box I've ever used is called Clevercat. It is a top entry litter box. There is a hole in a large lid. Put that part toward the wall/corner. The cats have to jump onto the other part of the lid to get out and all the litter falls off their feet before they jump to the ground.

No more litter on the floor. Really, barely any litter ever gets out. It is great! Who knew you could love a litter box so much?

This is how I got my cat to use it-

    1. Fill with same type of litter as old litter box.
    2. Place near old litter box without cover.
    3. Put new cover over old litter box (standing upright) so cats get used to going through the hole in the new lid.
    4. Put lid back on new box, put kitty in so he knows where it is.
    5. (Scary moment) Take away the old litter box and hope for the best.

    This worked for me.

I don't know where to get the Clevercat litter box. A friend gave it to me b/c her cat wouldn't use it but she changed litter brands when she got it and never took the old litter away so that might have been the problem. I'm sure it is easy to find online.
  • I have the Clevercat box. Stella loves it and Jackson was ok with it...However, he started peeing outside of the box and I was pretty sure it was emotional (had him tested for infection at vet). When I got a second box, Jackson stopped using the Clevercat box. Stella can be a bit of a bully, and I think Jackson felt trapped in there.

However, it is nice for reducing the amount of litter tracking for sure.
  • My cats have gone through several litters. They are old enough that they didn't need training after a change of litter. I am currently using scoop away. That is the best. I started off using world's best, nature's best, pine, arm and hammer, and fresh scoop.

Scoop away is the only thing that is easy to clean and doesn't stink for me. They use a booda dome litter box.
  • Oh yeah, I used the crystals too. Still stunk.
  • i have this box for mah kitteh (in red):

it's from a company called "cats rule." it is expensive for a litter box, but the inside is completely smooth and it rises up high in the back, so there are no corners or seams for litter or other stuff to gather up in, and this makes it worth it for me. also, we are in a small place where there is nowhere to hide a box, so if i have to see her doing her business, at least this way it's kind of cute. it's tall and deep and the opening is nice and wide, so kitteh can move around and do her "i'm going to bury this shit like it's a trunk full of doubloons" thing. she has respiratory troubles (allergy-induced chronic mild bronchitis), so i use swheatscoop because it's less dusty than clay litters. she does better with it than clay and it's fine, but i used to love the tidy cat multi cat.

whatever you do, stay FAR AWAY from corn-based litters. i tried one once and i wound up with a cat box full of MAGGOTS!!! i wanted to die. i had to check kitteh obsessively for a full 24 hours to make sure she hadn't been colonized by squirmies.

and while i'm here, i just want to say that i am sort of freaked out by this:
