Need to transport a painting to Manhattan from Gowanus — Brooklynian

Need to transport a painting to Manhattan from Gowanus

Hey maybe someone here can help me figure this out. I am a painter and my studio is down in Gowanus. I'm in a show in Tribeca, and I need to transport a single painting to the show this week. The painting isn't HUGE--but it is 50" wide. It won't fit in my car, and I dont' have access to a larger vehicle. I'd hire a man-with-a-van, but that will cost me around $50 at least.

Can I take it in a regular cab? Is there some kind of delivery service or something I can use? Any advice?

  • I have a friend who specializes in moving and storing fine art. Let me ask him (he may be too expensive but he might have some other referrals).
  • you can call a car service and/or NYC cab and request an SUV. That would probably be less $$ then a man w/ a van.
  • Thanks--I was WONDERING if I could request an SUV from a car service, but I have never seen one. That would solve all my problems and be cheaper than the man-with-a-van that I usually use.

Any recommendations for trusty car services that offer SUV service?

Thank you all--this site is a good resource!
  • Well, I am in the Bushwick area and I have called Bushwick car service to request an SUV when I was picking up a larger piece of furniture. I've also used North Side car service in W'burg. I'm sure any decent car service in your neighborhood will have SUV's, you just have to make the request. Good luck w/ the show!
  • My friend recommended the same - cab/SUV. You may want to call Court Street Car Service and ask them if they do this. They sometimes come late, though.
  • quick update in case anyone else ever needs this kind of thing: I called Arecibo. They arrived in 5 minutes, and it was a nice, big, clean SUV. They charged an additional $10 for the SUV service, but it was well worth it!

    So--problem solved. Thanks, everyone!
