Subject: Sharlene's / Mooney's

I was walking by the old Mooney's location earlier today and saw this in the window:

Thanks for the help with the pic, Mama (8th time was the charm!).

  • i can't see the pic...
  • you need to upload the picture to flikr or one of those photo sharing sites.

So now it's called sharlene's? what kind of name is that?
  • thanks :-)
  • i believe sharlene is a bartender at commonwealth bar on 5th Avenue and is one of the people opening up this new place...

    can't wait!
  • Cool! I love that all these new bars are opening up, although I'm still sad that Mooney's is gone.
  • Glad it's back as a bar, but still think it's a crappy name for a bar. This might be because I am so loyal to Mooney's (RIP)

damn I loved that bar. I miss mooney's !!
  • I liked Mooney's, but times change. I can't wait to give this place a try and join Mr. Meat with celebrating the opening of so many bars in Prospect Heights. It's going to be a fun summer, folks!
  • I'm in CG - where was Mooney's?
  • On Flatbush and 7th (or 8th), not far from the Q/B train

  • Mooney's needed to rip out that never used kitchen and make more lounge space. Hopefully Sharlene's will do that or at least serve food.

  • Yes, food would be wonderful. That was a major flaw of Mooney's.

  • flaw? with carneviento right next door?

  • Yes, flaw. When I'm drinking, I love to be able to order food at the bar and not have to move my lazy ass from the seat. Sure, I could get delivery, but doing so seems sillly from a place a few doors down.

  • Won't be long now. New signage:

  • Sharlene rules, by the way. She has gotten me pleasantly wasted many times at Commonwealth and is very friendly. Or so I remember through the haze of hundreds of pints.

The important thing is that a bar is opening in the old Mooney's space (many a night boozing there, too -- RIP), which is so necessary because there's jack all to do on that stretch of Flatbush. I really hope it works.

I remember a bar from my college days that didn't have food per se, but cleverly installed a window in the wall between it and the pizza place next door. Boom--food. Maybe Sharlene's should do that with the wing joint (they are adjacent, no?)
  • I find it pretty funny that the landlord wanted more money and didn't want a bar in that spot. She ended up with another bar and still didn't get the higher rent she wanted.
  • How do we know that Sharlene's is not paying higher rent than Mooney's? Not trying to be confrontational, just wondering if I missed something.
  • You didn't miss anything, I got the info from one of Mooney's old bartenders. (Who has no hard feelings about Mooney's closing, by the way.)
  • I hear the dart throwers are interested in knowing if there's gonna be a board in the bar.
  • I would love to know if there will be darts... I've been itching to play lately and only been able to throw at home because of a bum knee (all the other places are too far to walk to and stand on).
  • Speaking on no authority whatsoever, other than what I've heard through that ever-reliable grapevine - I have heard this is going to be a lounge-y spot with no tvs, no darts, no pool table. Anyone know better?
  • I had heard too, Q, but the same source also told me they didn't have a liquor license yet, either. So who knows.
  • Opens Thursday, so I'll see y'all there for happy hour. By the way, I no longer look like my picture. Facial hair is so two weeks ago.
  • And now, in NYT City blog

(The City section is closing down by the way.)
