**EMERGENCY PLACEMENT NEEDED**

Jack (A805479) is a 58lb 5 yr. old male pit that came into the Manhattan shelter last night as a stray. He was not able to stand on his hind legs, so we sent him to 5th Avenue Vet immediately to further assess the issue with his legs. Per the vet, he has an arthritic right elbow and incomplete use of his hind legs. He has been put on steroids and will require 6 weeks of bed/cage rest with limited mobility. He can stand and can go to the bathroom but can't walk up stairs, so basically he needs someone to care for him and take him in and out to go the bathroom and treat him (give him his steroids) but he can't be taken on long walks or runs and can't go up and down stairs. The vet can't say right now if his condition will improve or worsen with time, we just have to see how he does over the period of cage rest to see if he improves. The vet said he's a very friendly dog, he was easily treated and handled, but we don't know right now how he is with other dogs. The staff thought he was a pretty mellow guy though.

We realize that this is asking a lot, but a dog like Jack is precisely why we do what we do – to try and give dogs that have had a hard life, and probably not treated very well – a second chance at being healthy and happy. Aside from occasionally helping him become mobile, Jack (at least at first, hopefully assuming he will improve over time) should be a pretty easy foster as he can’t get around too well.

If you’re able to rescue Jack for us – we will arrange for transportation IMMEDIATELY, make sure all of his medication is with him along with complete instructions from the vet on how to properly care for him over the next several weeks.

PLEASE, we need someone to step forward for this poor guy – let us know ASAP!

  • What is it with pit bulls? This is the THIRD sad situation involving a put bull that I've heard about today. Are pit bulls often raised by neglectful idiots or what?

  • I think that's exactly it. And it sucks as it gives this breed a bad name, 90% of stray/"lost" dogs in the shelter are pit bulls.

  • They're the "cool" breed to have, so a lot of younger/impulsive people get them. But like other things cool at the moment, they quickly tire of the dog and then never properly train the dog, socialize it, or develop a proper relationship with it. So the dog bolts and winds up in a shelter and the owner doesn't bother to go looking, or gets kicked out, or bites someone, etc.

I know the 19 y/o kid who works in my office and is often two hours late for his 4 hour afternoon work shift (i.e., he's not terribly responsible) has two pit bulls and he's planning on breeding them..... Thankfully it sounds like he's making the effort to train his but I imagine not all of the folks he'll sell them to will be as diligent. I wonder how many of his grandpuppies will someday be in AC&C...
