Darn! PS Animal Clinic on Flatbush is gone!! Anyone recc

a good, no frills, no bs Veterinarian in Slope, Prospect or Crown Heights or Fort Greene area?
I am soooo upset Park Slope Animal Center on Flatbush (beside Posh Pets) is gone!! They weren't 'frilly' at all, but gave my dog (plus other referrals) excellent care! They gave me sensible home remedies like teaching me to drain her anal sac myself, unlike Animal Kind that gladly charged me $40 a month for over a year to do it, but I guess it was better than the unnecessary acupuncture from Brooklyn Vet on Vanderbilt lol. PS never over medicated or overcharged me. My friends pooch had to have an emergency hysterectomy and they charged her $700, the lowest other quote she received was $1000. Dog healed fine and has had no other complications. Anyway, as you can tell I'm really gonna miss them...

Which brings me to my real question: Any good no nonsense vets in the area that won't try to fleece us?

I'm honestly sooo sick of vets that prey on ignorance and suffering. This is my first dog and when I got her I knew nothing and paid dearly financially for it. Not to mention all the unnecessary poking, prodding and pain she went through. It was only after I educated myself, and worked with the vets at PS Center that she truly started living like a 'healthy' dog, who people still mistake for a puppy.
I know I cant be the only one who went through this, so tell me, which Dr. do you take your beloved pet to?

  • if we had a FAQ on Brooklynian, WHAT VET? would be on it. Click the link for past discussion, which is already very in-depth.

I've had good experiences with both Hope Vet on Atlantic, and Animal Healing Arts on Henry St in Carroll Gardens (a one vet practice, Dr Julie Morris) I had a terrible experience at 6th Ave Vet Clinic (6th and Union) and found Animal Kind to be not what I was looking for...

  • Thanks for posting. From the reviews, I think the prices at Hope are slightly high. I have a pit who (luckily) doesn't require much beyond basic care as I feed her an excellent diet and baby her to bits at home lol.

Btw, I did do a search prior to posting. I just haven't found anyone who spoke about straight/no bs care.

  • Hope is good, but I agree that it is rather pricey. We have 2 cats and a puppy that we take to Hope Vet. The cats are indoor cats so we don't keep up with the shots.

For veterinary emergencies, I recommend the Vet Emergency Group on Warren Street. It is expensive, but our Louie (bulldog puppy) had pneumonia and they did a great job. He's back to his normal, ridiculous self.

  • Subject: vet discount

I used to go to Hope when i lived over there. Nice vets-though no bargain and always a long wait. Having said that I recently joined The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and noticed that Hope offer 10% discount to BBG members. For a $40 annual fee which is completely tax deductable, it could be worth if for vets fees alone!

  • Park Slope Veterinary Care - 413 5th Ave. 718-788-0500
Someone recommended them highly to us, and we had a good experience taking our cat there. He's an indoor cat, so we don't go often, but they seem to be no BS, common-sense vets. We recommended them to our friends, and they were happy.

I've had the same experience with long waits at Hope Vet. If it's just a vet tech appointment (i.e., shots), they see you right away but we've waited up to an hour for appointments with the vet. Good to know about BBG - I should renew my membership.

  • Wow...wish I knew about the Hope/BBG discount a couple months ago!
    Thx dawnc
  • the warren street emergency group is great, if you are in that unfortunate predicament. they have all med specialty consults available and very pleasant and sensitive, in my experience. $$$$, yes, but not that much more than comparable full-service vets.

honestly, i've been living with pets in this area for 20+ years and i still gravitate towards animal kind. like many people who are less than satisfied with their experience there, i've had my share and have forked over huge amounts of money for said over the years and was not a happy camper about it. but there are a couple of solid wonderful vets at a.k. and the technology and support they have is top notch. everything from routine shots and checkups, to emergency surgery, to euthanasia.

so, when i go, i schedule appointments only with the vets i trust. i let them know that i am a poor social worker/civil servant, and i question all 'recommended procedures.'

this keeps me relatively pleased with animal kind.
