Bedbugs in 960 Sterling Place???
In the last few days I’ve noticed (and flushed) a couple of bedbugs in my bathroom. I’ve inspected my bed and fortunately bedbug free. Finding them in the bathroom leads me to think they are migrating to my apartment via the plumbing from another place/apartment. Around a month ago a flyer was posted in the building asking the residents to report bedbug issues to the building’s management. Is the building infested? Are other apartments experiencing bedbugs? Has the building been inspected? Please share your info and recommendations.

I do not live at this address but, when I had bed bugs they were hiding in the walls not the bed. Since you did not find them in your bed does not mean you don't have them in other parts of your apartment. Have you been bitten? If you have not been bitten than probably you just found some migrating bed bugs. Report the problem right away to the management company and start dealing with it by spraying etc.
Good luck,
Daniel -
Even if you see only ONE bedbug I'd say get the place sprayed by an exterminator FAST. I've never had to deal with them, but I know that they are not something you fuck around with. Once you are infested it's pure hell.

ok...if they are coming from the walls.... you are screwed.
Here is why. I have encountered bedbegs on my 4th yr of living in my old apartment. *I* did not bring them in. The filth that lived below me did and they got into the walls. I found most of them in the kitchen!
If they are in the walls, exterminating will be useless. I bought something called Cyonara 9. Works great! However, if their base ISNT your apartment, they will keep coming.
To help save yourself money DOCUMENT everything (complaints or otherwise). You might have to get rid of furniture and even clean your clothes. They get in from everywhere! (ever see the news article about bedbugs on the benches of the subways?) Get one of those bedbug proof covers for your mattress as well. No bed bugs will get in and if they are in, they will not get out. I believe the eggs can live up to 6 months and the bug itself can live a long while without food too.
The only way to get rid of them if they are in the walls is for the building to be gassed in full, not just your apt. -
Subject: DO NOT DELAY!!!
Get your place treated immediately. Get a mattress cover and use duct tape over the zipper once it's enclosed. We had an infestation (mattress - pillows, etc) last April. We got it treated and fortunately seem to have beaten the problem. But besides the cost (appx $700 to wash or dry clean all clothing etc) we spent MANY sleepless nights freaking out and flipping the mattress around.
Your landlord (if rental) or Management Company (if owned) should be able to cover most of the costs. get on this now, trust me...it's the WORST!!! -
Thank you all for the disturbing, but useful, advice. I’ve contacted the management company and they are getting an exterminator over here ASAP. I did a thorough check around the sightings and couldn’t find any hiding bedbugs. I did notice that the area is near three doors that are not entirely sealed off from the wall’s interior which leads me to think they are within the walls. I’m pretty sure they haven’t reached my mattress yet. Whatever the outcome, I don’t think I’ll be able to continue living here without a sense of uneasiness.

DO NOT FUCK AROUND.
They are like a plauge.
The little fuckers are relentless and the longer you wait, the more they get entrenched in every nook and the more money you have to spend to be rid of them.
Go nuclear, fast. -
Here is another tip.
Duct Tape is great because its so sticky. What you want to do is put tape on your bed legs (and legs of any furniture)...but reverse the tape so its sticky side is out. Make it wrap around those legs tight too.
If a bug tries to crawl up, it has a good chance of sticking to it. This is more like a first, cheap line of defense against them infesting your furniture -
Call an exterminator and have them killed immediately. You are in for a very frustrating and expensive time. The good news is that the landlord is responsible for the extermination. Get a quote and bring it to your landlord. If he or she refuses, call the city.
After a week or two when you have seen no bedbugs, steam clean your mattresses, upholstery, and carpets. This will kill and remove all remaining eggs.
Good luck with your bedbug problem. I hope you get rid of them quickly. -
My friend went through this and even though the building owner will bring in exterminators, you still lose so much money in getting clothes, bedding couches, mattresses replaced or super freaking HOT washed. It's nightmare. His place was on Dean Street BTW... so beware renting on Dean this year.

Dean Street? What are the cross streets?
-
between 4th and 5th ave
But I'll probably get in trouble for saying it  :-k -
I hate to say it but even if you think you've kicked them over the winter, you may not have. They hibernate.
We had three years of hell and then did everything you're supposed to do PLUS we moved.
Now that spring is here I'm having major PTSD and thinking I see them and feel them and am getting VERY paranoid.
GOOD LUCK. Do EVERYTHING you're supposed to do. Every three weeks till they are GONE.
