RoadRunner Internet - frequent lost connections? — Brooklynian

RoadRunner Internet - frequent lost connections?

Posted this in the PS forum, but thought some feedback from our PH colleagues couldn't hurt!

For about 1 week or so, my Internet connection is sporadically dropping off and I'm at a loss to explain why. This almost always happens like this:

1. Open Firefox
2. The New York Times site loads correctly as my default start page
3. I try to navigate to a different page (from Favorites or by typing in URL)
4. I get "The page www.xxxxxx.com cannot be found."

Now, the interesting thing is, if I click around on the nytimes.com site that already loaded, the pages load fine. It's clear I'm still connected to the Internet, I just can't visit any other sites. Even if I try opening another browser like Internet Explorer, it won't find that browser's default start page or any other site. Also doesn't matter if I try to use my Favorites or manually type in the URL... the sites won't load.

Now, usually within 30 sec to 3 or 4 minutes, everything seems to fix itself and I can navigate as usual (until the next outage). Turning the modem on and off also usually, but not always, works.

Anyone else having similar problems?

  • I've been using road runner for several years and have never had that problem. I find that the customer service is pretty good for road runner, so if you give them a call they might be able to help you fix it.
  • that sounds more like spyware/virus stuff. download spybot and adaware (both free) and see if they fix everything for you. road runner may also have suggestions.
  • already did all that - definitely not virus, adware, spyware, or my wifi router. there are loads of posts about similar issues on other sites (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cable,rr, for example). I think TWCNYC is doing something with their network.

Weird. I wonder if the pages you've already visited are showing up is because they are in your cache?

  • this is actually a firefox problem, the new (1.5 I think) version is doing this

    not roadrunner

what I thought this would be about is roadrunner cutting service off every day or so, and me having to reset the modem and PC just to get internet service back

I think this happens because of my torrent uploading, and I hate it
  • interesting suggestion about firefox. but i havent updated firefox lately and the problem occurs with IE also. RoadRunner's Medic software says that the problem is one of DNS resolution. I seriously doubt the tech that is coming out today will be able to do one lick of good, but it's the required first step before I can get someone more knowledgable on the phone.
  • yea, you may be right

I get the problem with ff only, ie gets me on every site everytime

my googling showed me that apparently ff1.5 is buggy that way, hopefully they'll send a new one out soon

but after reading your threads through, it seems that others are having the same problems as you

let us know how it turns out!
  • That sounds like a DNS issue. You get one lookup, for nytimes.com, and it works properly; clicking any link from that domain won't require another name server query. But for whatever reason (um, how about because RR sucks?) you are then not getting any further DNS info.

Look through the RR support pages and see if you can find your proper DNS servers, then try adding them manually to your TCP connection, even if you're on DHCP.

Or, better yet, get DSL from Speakeasy and find out what true customer service and hassle-free broadband is *actually* like.

(yes, that link earns me credits on my service)
