No Wednesday Mail Delivery? — Brooklynian

No Wednesday Mail Delivery?

brooklyngigcenter
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I did not receive any mail today, and I think this also happened last Wednesday. I'm on 10th betw 7th and 8th.

If this is intentional, I would think it makes more sense to withhold delivery on Tuesday, as it's usually a lighter mail day.

Is anyone else having the same experience?

  • Weird. I was waiting for a specific envelop on Tuesday and received no mail -- not even my daily junk mail -- until today (Wednesday). Is the carrier resting his or her legs between brownstones?
  • We got mail yesterday and today, perhaps you just didn't get any mail today?
  • I'd chalk it up to the random but overwhelming crappiness of the Brooklyn postal system, not a specific policy change.

We definitely had days our person just didn't show up (or maybe the bag for our block didn't get delivered to the green box) but in a building with 20 apartments. All magazines and bulky items were just left on the radiator (very small mail boxes), it was pretty obvious we were skipped when we got no mags, catalogs, or junk mail.

I think it's just general incompetence. Our current mailman refuses to separate the mail for the apartments into the different boxes and just puts it all in one. Very annoying. Plus we always end up with stuff from neighboring houses or far away addresses on our street. Who knows how much stuff we don't get.
  • No news is good news, IMO.

You may want to call the post office and talk to the supervisor. I did that when I had a problem with package slips and got the supervisor at the Red Hook Post Office who actually was nice and seemed competent, resolved the issue AND followed up with a call or two to me to make sure all was taken care of on my end.
  • There were a few spots of rain yesterday, maybe your mail carrier is Newman.
  • My favorite mail issue? The little slips saying, "We tried to deliver a package today..."

Um, I watched you deliver the mail, and no you did not. And you won't "redeliver" it either. I have to go to the soviet cheese line that is the 9th street post office and gamble as to whether I actually get it or not.

    Rant over.

I would call to complain. We had a problem where our former postal carrier wasn't sorting mail that well at all (again, we all wondered what we weren't getting) and amazingly a call to the customer service line straightened it up. Overall, though, I don't trust the Post Office in Brooklyn to get me anything. If it's really important, I have it delivered to my office in Manhattan.

UPS and FedEx do this too. "We tried to deliver.." Yeah, I checked the tracking that said out for delivery and stayed home all day to make sure you could deliver, but you didn't bother to ring my bell. Either that or the tracking says it was delivered or left at the front door, when it's actually still on the truck. I hope FedEx UPS know not to leave anything outside a front door in NYC.

There's actually a separate truck for packages, it's not the person who brings the daily mail.
  • yup, that I know. but he didn't come by on the 2 days I got this notice. I was looking.

    Hee, Soviet cheese line!

I'm a block away from you on 10th Street and I got mail that day, but it's no great accomplishment - I regularly get my mail, my neighbor's mail and random mail sent to 14th and 15th Street addresses. Our regular mail guy is lousy.
  • The suggestion to call the post office is an interesting one... I've done it (with the "Adelphi Branch") and, well, it wasn't pleasant. 3 or 4 days of being hung up on or no answer or busy at all hours.

After 4 days of calling -- or trying to call -- around a dozen times throughout each day, I was told I had to call back the next week because my regular carrier was on vacation!! My problem was obviously with the SUBSTITUTE carrier... "Call back next week when she's back. <<Click>>"

So, I didn't get my mail for a week and magically received a huge bundle on monday. Tried to call again to discuss, but they broke me and I gave up.
  • i called the van brunt PO today, and was shocked to talk to a very pleasant and receptive manager. Still can't really believe it.

That being said, we 'll see if my "agent" is able to pick up my packages today...

Evidently, if you ahve someone picking up a package for you, they need to have YOUR ID. Does that seem weird to anyone?
  • Subject: Just to be fair

I live in relative proximity from the original poster and must have a different carrier. Our normal mail person and his surrogates on his days off are fantastic (and friendly). Shout out to Mike the mailman and the older Asian-American who delivers the packages in the truck.

    Just saying.
  • it's Wednesday and over here in Center Slope, we got mail.

Yeah, it is weird - ran into this problem when I went to pick up a package for my husband. He signed the delivery slip and authorized me to pick it up but the person at the window still wanted his ID (we have different last names). I was able to finesse it by producing my health insurance card, which has both our names, and I got the package. I'll never understand post office rules.
  • " I'll never understand post office rules."

Ugh, they're so different. I get packages a lot with advertising on the box but when you mail from our PO's all advertising has to be covered up. Now you have to listen to a 10 minute speech to see if you want to switch to Express Mail for an extra 30 bucks. I had a few boxes to mail once and the woman repeated this for each freaking box. Even when I was shaking my head no she still had to say it.
  • yeah, I don't understand the no advertising on boxes thing. it must just be a NY rule because I have a relative who lives out in Cali and she sends me stuff all the time in boxes with advertising or other names on it, her post office doesn't give her a problem about using them. but, here in NY, if there is one thing on the outside of the box other than the mailing label, they will not accept it.

Thats just crazy. By law, the post office has to accept anything and everything that is properly addressed with correct postage on it. This includes rocks, which someone once sent me. (It was an art project).
  • No, sorry, there are signs up in all the post offices about how they will not take a box with any names, labels or advertising on it.

So, if you want to use your old zappos box to ship some candy to your granny in philly, you better cover up the zappos name or they won't take it.

Exactly. I don't see why the rules are not the same for all post offices.
