Coffee shop. As much as I like Prospect Perk, it's pretty cramped and uncomfortable. Why they have so much prep space and so little seating is beyond me.
This poll needs more options, though... We've already got sushi overload. And who needs another Kings Pharmacy/Duane Reade? -
Subject: I confess...
I am a lazy PH'er. It would be nice to have some more stuff on Vanderbilt. Getting to Flatbush via Prospect Place seems like an eternity for a band-aid or a spicy tuna roll.
The home heating store really put me a funk. That bright red awning haunting me everytime I walk to the B train just sucks. -
Fish and Chips. Fish and Chips! Fish and Chips!!! A good Puerto Rican restaurant. A bookstore. A real Mexican restaurant. Ethiopian food. Oh, and freakin' bookstore already.
-
MEXICAN? I didn't even think of that!!!! That would be great. A bookstore would be cool too. Too bad they can't open a B&N above the Caree dry cleaners.
-
I'm with Andy on the coffee shop idea -- something as good and indie as Gorilla on 5th Ave. in the Slope, but with more space.
-
Yum, Ethiopian food would be awesome. But we do need a coffee shop. Priorities.
-
A B&N was not what I had in mind. I would prefer a private owned business run by neighborhood residents. This bookstore would ideally serve both the West Indian population and the influx of you 20-somethings and families. A small shop with a coffeemaker and chair and/or couch will offer the personal attention a chain cannot give, attention that would create a solid customer base. A good location would be Washington or Vanderbilt Aves.

Have you been to the ginger something cafe on Washington? They were really nice but no soymilk and burnt coffee....

Fresh salmon cakes dinner with 2 vegetable sides - $7. Delish! Homemade meatloaf, etc...Plus the ladies who cook here are just as sweet as can be. Good, reasonable sized {not gargantuan} morninglory muffins for the am, too. -
When I said we need a coffee shop, I overlooked the fact that the Half wine bar doubles as a coffee bar in the AMs. I'm still looking for a good dedicated coffee space. But Half is here. It's near. Get used to it.

Subject: A bagel shop & pizza place
A bagel shop (and don't tell me Bergen Bagels - I live at Underhill and St. John's - too far), and a decent pizza place - it still astounds me there's no decent pizza in PHeights - you'd think we didn't live in New York or something. -
My husband spoke to the owner on Friday and he said they plan on opening on Monday. That seems an odd day to open, but I hope it's true.

just a ggod old fashioned 2nd ave deli thing
-
Just thought I'd kick it old school and revive this long-dead thread.
Interesting... since this, the coffee shop and Mexican restaurant thing have happened (albeit on Flatbush, not Vanderbilt). -

Have you tried Bob Law's Seafood Cafe? -

There's a fish & chips place on Park Place just past the shuttle. I can't vouch for it, though. (But I've always been curious) -
My prayers were answered with the news about the Korean joint that's coming. Other than that I want a bakery with fresh bread and cupcakes.

Funny, I was walking past that place just yesterday and realized I had never ventured in, but was always curious. What do you think of it?
-----------------
And, by the way, this neighborhood definitely needs a bookstore, even a used bookstore would be great. I got some pretty amazing finds at the one on 7th Avenue towards 6th Street a couple of days ago. -

I don't know if you plan on reviving the poll, but it IS seriously flawed. Perhaps just a "none of the above" option ... ? -

Many fried options, which is always nice...:D
I've been once- had some flavorful fried shrimp. I like the batter they use. Choice of sides includes the expected (rice and peas, collards, etc.) all done reasonably well. Overall (again based only on one visit so far), the place is pretty good, not great. I'd definitely go again, given the proximity.
