Subject: I've been set up ...

On a date with a friend of a friend.

Thing is, she wants it to be a social situation.

So, any ideas on where (in Manhattan) 6 people or so could meet up to converse, have a few drinks, and maybe some light food/tapas?

  • oh boy...we expect details, just so you know :)

    i'll have to put some thought into where you can go
  • Pictures or it didn't happen.
  • Where in Manhattan specifically? do you want a nice and fancy bar or more of a local hang out?

    ideally below 14th st.

    type of place - i don't know yet. I'm asking my friend what types of places her friend likes to go to.

    Crap.

    that place looks quite nice, hadn't heard of it before. a definite possibility
  • Corner Shop Cafe on Broadway and Bleecker. Decent drinks and small apps plus a small, but tasty menu. Close to some trains and cabs.

    This is one of our go-to spots for groups of 3-8, for a hanging out meal or a quick bite before a show. Not sure how often I've been on a Fri/Sat. night but on other nights it's crowded but the wait for a table (if there is a wait) has always been short.

    Oh, and I also really like Boca Chica at Houston/1st Ave. Decent sangria and other booze plus a great menu and lively atmosphere. This is another one I've been to several times and always been happy, but there may be a long wait on Fri/Sat nights but maybe that's just everywhere here :)

    It's been there a long time, but it's still a fun place. With a group of 6, it would pay to get there on the early side, otherwise you might be waiting a while for a table.
  • oh yea, its gonna be a thursday night.

    i've been to cornershop a few times since i used to work nearby. it doesn't strike me as the right match though.

    ill look into boca chica. thanks
  • Boca Chica is fun but it can be noisy. I love those plantain chips. Nom nom nom.
  • bar stuzzichini on B'way & 21st is a good, neutral vibe place -- lots of small plates and great wine list.
  • whoops! you said below 14th street. sorry about that.
  • Vidro - personally I think that sucks butt for a first date to be a group thing, but whatevs. I say try a wine bar. Any of them. They all have small plates. Most recently tried Allen and Delancey, but that's better for one on one.

    Oh, i've got it -- the front area of Verlaine is perfect for a group thing, their cocktails are amazing, they have food and it's happy hour until 10pm! (It's also the bar Brooklynbound and I went on dates with the same dude at so be on the lookout for a muscular Indian dude haha!)
  • you can go to sala...

    if this is the place i remember, there's a downstairs too and you can find seating
  • OO yeah the downstairs is very sexy blue cave. Candle lit bathrooms, yummy sangria and wine. Tapas are hit or miss though.
  • Pravda. Dirty martinis and caviar (with toast points). You can reserve one of the sofas. Maybe more appropriate for your first date though.

  • Looks cool, VD. I have to try that place.

    Now in just 2 weeks, I'm looking forward to checking out this place.

    Uh, that's way cooler. Bring me back a six shooter or a bud bomb pleeeease.
  • 10 degrees is my go-to "chill" date winebar spot. I love that place.
  • i really like bbar, even though it's a bit trendy. the food is good.

    or salt, on mcdougal.

    or that place on west 3rd, what's called, bear university. the place with the fondue
  • Love this place but it might be a bit small for 6+
    Nice bar right next door too...

  • Shebeen is a nice place, with friendly bartenders, a chill atmosphere and good artwork. The seating is not the most comfortable, though.
  • I haven't been to Prada in years.

    True about the Sala tapas being hit or miss, but some are really decent, the staff is nice, and I like the downstairs area.
  • Seconding Pravda.

    Other options:

    * Pegu Club - http://nymag.com/listings/bar/pegu-club/
    * PDT - http://nymag.com/listings/bar/pdt/
    * Angel's Share - http://nymag.com/listings/bar/angels_share/

    Pegu's the roomiest of the bunch, PDT *absolutely* requires reservations. But PDT has the cool bonus points of the secret entrance and the ability to eat hotdogs & drink whiskey at the same time.
  • Amending that - Angel's Share doesn't serve food.
  • Are you sure? Last time I was at Angel Share we got some appetizers.
  • Angels' Share definitely does not allow a party of 6. Otherwise I definitely would have recommended it. I've been going there for about 13 years now. When they first opened, their maximum party size was 6, then 5, and I believe it is now 4.
  • thanks for all the tips i've wanted to try pravda for a while, and coincidentally walked by shebeen today.

    also in the running is St. Dymphnas on st mark's place, oh wow that's right next store to 10 degrees.

    I guess you know where to go if you want to stalk me.
