Gorilla Workers? — Brooklynian

Gorilla Workers?

darcyfan
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Anyone else fed up with the workers at Gorilla Coffee? It seems like every time I go in there, the service gets worse and worse. (The only exception is the tall skinny dude with all the tats and the spacers in his ears; he is always very pleasant and seems to have been raised with manners.)

The majority of them, however, are douches. Half of them don't ever say thank you; the milk area is disgusting most of the time; if you ask for replacement milk, you would think you were asking for a kidney; if the line is out the door, they still take their sweet old time.

I love their coffee; I go there every day. But I think I might just stop giving them my business because I can't stand their stank attitude.

or is it just me?

  • Really? I always find the staff there to be pleasant and helpful. Maybe it's a morning vs. afternoon shift thing. Are you there always at the same time?
  • afternoons.
  • thank you is a pointless term.
  • I'm there pretty often and haven't noticed anything, but then again I'm cute so everyone is nice to me.

You have confused yourself with Bruno.

Staying on topic: I have not noticed a difference in Gorilla Coffee. ...it may be relevant to point out that I have never been to Gorilla coffee.

I don't follow. All "thank yous" or just the coffee ones? "Thank you for your business which keeps this shop open so I get to retain my job in an economy where so many others are unemployed" seems far from pointless to me.

Totally irrelevant, whynot. Have you not noticed that experience with a particular subject is not in any way a prerequisite for joining a thread here?
  • I go for the beans. Throw $11 at anyone behind the counter, no matter how long the line. Grind and brew ya own.
  • Mougar wrote: I'm there pretty often and haven't noticed anything, but then again I'm cute so everyone is nice to me.
I'm not nice to you. Jerk. And I avoid all coffee shops because I don't drink coffee. I might be the only person on the face of the earth who doesn't.

    Freak.

Damn skippy, but be sure to get your card punched; I get a free pound about every 6 - 8 weeks.

I actually think that most of the workers there are pretty decent, I've only singled out one as... well, lazy, unhelpful, possibly dull-witted...
  • I've never had a problem with anyone there, but I don't go that often because it's a little too far for an everyday thing for me.
  • I have noticed the last two times I've been in this month it has been burnt...

You don't intimidate me like you do Em. And you are no longer my BFF. SO THERE!
  • saram wrote: I have noticed the last two times I've been in this month it has been burnt...
I can't speak to the drip coffee, I always get beans, a macchiato or an espresso. All three are consistently excellent, and on occasion they'll even make suggestive patterns in my foam.
  • I'm with you, Darcy. The staff at Gorilla are usually pretty unfriendly. The coffee used to compensate, but I've noticed a decline in cupping quality/skills as well.

Same story at Cocoa Bar... unfriendly staff (and some seriously high prices).

Ozzie's, which I avoid like the plague bc their coffee is disgusting, also has some staff issues.

Starbucks folks are generally pretty nice, but it's Starbucks so, you know... only in a serious pinch.

Southside Coffee has very nice baristas and f'ing amazing coffee.
  • There is certainly a need for a nice service/good coffee/not starbucks place in Park Slope. That being said, I love the coffee at Gorilla Coffee and going there - even with the not-very-nice staff is amusing to me. Checking out the people with the tats/piercings/spacers/spikes/paper clips/etc is kind of like going to the zoo. Sure they might throw shit at me, but it is kind of cool to check out.
  • Never had a problem, in fact they've been pretty cool to me.
I take all my out-of town guest there, they are always impressed by the coffee.

Clearly they're just nicer to us pretty people ;-)
  • they've always been super friendly every time i've been in. love the place, although i actually think they could use another branch in ps, because that one is always so packed.

how bout one up on 7th...?

How about one in Prospect Heights, near the 7th Ave and GAP subway stops, in the old Biscuit space on Flatbush. They would clean up with people going to and from the subways.
  • sounds good to me!

a really good coffee shop up in the north end of park slope or over the border in prospect heights would indeed clean up....

And they would probably run Prospect Perk in to the ground.

Oh, BTW, speaking of alternate coffee house locations, I hear that the coffee shop in our ol' store (corner of WA and St Marks) is getting close; I think that they're shooting for an opening in less than a month...
  • I walk by Gorilla every day, and *try* to get something just about every morning on the way to work.

I'm not going to name names, because it's entirely possible that some of the employees are on here and, at the very least, are probably very nice people. I decide to go in depending on who's manning the espresso station. There is one particular employee who is so slow that, if it's them, I walk right back out on a weekday.

There's a certain degree of gruff and entitlement we like from our indie coffee shop employees (much like the entitlement I used to possess when i was a record store employee many moons ago). The crew at Gorilla definitely tows the line between an acceptable amount and too much sometimes.

And, of course, Cocoa Bar doesn't have the gruff, but is just off the charts as far as entitlement goes. What awful service....and, unlike Chocolate Room, not even the product to back it up.

I'd love to have a good coffee option in the N. Slope/Heights up 6th ave., as I walk to the C train to work every morning. There's not a whole lot. Helios was opening for breakfast and serving La Colombe for about two weeks, but that idea ended quickly.

PH does need something else. Heights Coffee is obviously undrinkable. I don't mind Prospect Perk since they started serving Equal Exchange, though.
  • maybe I'm just getting too old to put up with entitlement from kids pulling coffee.

Now Southside...man, that is my favorite coffee place of all. They have EXCELLENT product, and the guys there are always super nice and chill. I don't see why I can't get my coffee and a smile and a "Hey how's it going" like I do at Southside at Gorilla.

I also want to give a very good honorable mention also to the gal at the Lyceum in the morning on Union/4th AVe. Again, good product, nice 'tude.
  • Funny, I think the entitlement is coming solely from the older couples/gentrifiers, and maybe these Gorilla guys are tired of the snobbery from some people in PS.

Oh snap, I said gentrifiers! Hiding from the flame storm to come  :pale: .. of course I don't mean this is a general way. I love PS.
  • Funny, I think the entitlement is coming solely from the work staff. I actually have never experienced snobbery from the customers at all.

And I mean, come on, how old can the workers really be? 23? 24? They are entitled to nothing yet...lol.
  • I know its too far for most of you, but Roots cafe (5th ave and 18th) serves great coffee and has friendly staff. :D:D:D

I'm with you mamma. I'm not a tattooed love boi, and I get perfectly good service at Gorilla. I might even be an "older couple," dunno. Anyway, really makes me wonder what other people are expecting.

p.s. I usually like the music, which paired with coffee anticipation puts me a good mood anyway

darcyfan, you think 23 year olds should bow to you or something?
    :roll: :lol::lol::lol:

Mmmmmm, Gorilla Coffee. I want coffee......
  • Pitu: Yes, and then back out of the room in a humble manner...

I just think we should all crusade for manners; it takes no effort and can make a tremendous difference.

And so can even one man's decision not to drop $10 a week on coffee. I am done with the place....after I finish my card and get my free one ... lol. And even then, I will tip, say thank you, and waltz out of that place FOREVER!
