Kingston Ave @ St. Mark's? — Brooklynian

Kingston Ave @ St. Mark's?

Subject: Kingston Ave @ St. Mark's?

I'm looking into at an apartment at Kingston Avenue and St. Marks. I haven't been to see it yet (I've got an appointment) and don't know that part of the neighborhood. Is that an okay block? Quiet or loud? Safe? Anything you guys can tell me would be greatly appreciated!

  • So you'd be real close to Brower Park, the elementary school, and the Brooklyn Children's Museum, which is currently undergoing a huge expansion and improvement. The school and park are convenient if you like to vote. Or have a dog. Or appreciate open space. I'm on the other side of the park, so I can't speak to quality of life there. St. Marks bet Brooklyn and Kingston is loaded with drop dead gorgeous houses, mostly in great shape. We bid on a house there, but didn't get it (long story). I think that stretch of Kingston is ready for a few improvements, amenities-wise. I think it's a 'sleeper' area and will get hot and see improvements over the next few years. Go and check it out.
  • It sounds nice! Thanks for the info. Do you know whether it's far from any sort of commercial areas (groceries, laundry, etc.)?
  • Laundry, don't know, but groceries yes. Excellent Foodtown on Fulton and Brooklyn (Restoration Plaza)

The finefare on Kingston and st johns in newly renovated and not too bad, its clean and well stocked, there is a laundry on st johns and Kingston that has drop off service (best idea since sliced bread). The Brooklyn Childrens Jewish Museum and the Lubavich (sp) headquaters add a constant police presence in the area so all and all its a pretty good area, not a place that I would hang out in but a good place to live.

Turns out this same owner also has a place at Lenox Rd. and Nostrand that's cheaper and more in line with what I'm looking for. That's not even in Crown Heights, though...

That's in Flatbush, (Winthrop St stop on the 2 train, right?) and it's significantly more dangerous. I work a few blocks from there.

I think so. They want to show it to me later in the week but I think I'm going to pass after seeing another place nearby yesterday. I may have them to show me the first place, though, so the info here has been very helpful!

I looked at another place a couple of stops further north today that was a little more encouraging, at least.
