what would you have done?
I'm just calming down from being scared to death by my room mate.
I got home at about 8:50am today, (pat on back) walked up the stairs to my apartment and on the landing saw my room mate's clothes, jacket, shoes, pocket book, keys, etc. strewn all over the landing. her pants and underwear were laying there turned inside out. her pocket book was on its side with the contents spilled on the floor.
It did not look like a good scene. Coupled with the robberies recently, I was worried.
I knocked on her door, called her name, and went in her room. no sign of the girl. I looked all through my apartment, the attic, the roof, the basement, the boiler room, and found nothing. I got my cousin from downstairs, showed him the scene and he was spooked too. We searched the whole house again. We were standing in her room talking about how we could not find her. I called her cell phone, but it was in her jacket on the stairs. I called her sister and parents from her phone. Sister didn't answer, (still hasn't) and the parents didn't know anything.
I called a retired nypd sergeant I know and he was coming over with the local precinct.
As he was calling me I walked back into her room and grabbed the covers on her bed. There she was. Curled up in the corner, in the fetal position covered with blankets.
-Are you okay? What happened? Your stuff is all over the place.
-- I don't know about that man. (Groan) (Sleep)
Shit. i did not need that to start the day.
I guess I should have looked through the bed better but still, that was a spooky scene to come upon and there was a lot of commotion that did not roust her, including two people standing in her room and talking. Must take a lot of drink to get to that state.

Is this a common occurrence? Did she leave the door open? Does she need an intervention? I'd have called the cops then A&E.
-
heh, no first time i've seen this. all the doors were locked.
-
Weird. I mean, Original Penny Night cost me $375.00 because I "lost" my keys. The next morning, I found them under the coffee table. I have no idea...
SO - I think everyone is entitled to a weirdo freak night where your clothes end up on the landing. Provided it isn't an every night thing. I can understand that it freaked you out, though. -
Well what has she said since? Poor girl. Don;t make a big scene out of it, not that you haven't already, she does need her privacy and will probably sober up and feel extremely embarrassed. Especially cause you called her parents too!! Just saying, poor girl, be sweet to her and let her explain in her own due time and when she feels comfortable and better. For now, keep out of her business for a while.
-
she hasnt said anything. she is still asleep.
i do try to stay out of her business. though there have been times when I checked up on her, e.g. when she went away for a long weekend and didn't say anything. I think if I don't see or hear from my roomie for 3 nights I am justified in calling and asking if everything is okay. That's just what I'm used to. She apparently is not.
anyway, i just put this up here because I wanted to see if people think I over reacted.
I feel stupid that she was in her bed the whole time but she really was dead to the world. there was a lot of noise and people standing in her room talking about her and she didn't make a peep. -
i probably would have done the exact same thing you did, V. i don't think you overreacted, considering all the things, underwear included, strewn on the landing of the apt. i think it's funny you missed her in the bed, but nonetheless your heart was in the absolute right place, and no one can fault you for that.
i'd be lucky to have you as a roommate. and i agree with Mama, be sweet to her and let her explain in her own due time. she's probably mortified (or at least she will be when she sobers up and realizes all the hubbub she caused). -
thanks shish, thats what i needed to hear

Yech, I've been in a similarish situation where I over-reacted- best fiend was TOTALLY HAMMERED at a bar (surprised she was walking) and out of the corner of my eye I saw some dude leading her by the hand into the bathroom...I wigged out and knocked on the door, he was telling me to "go away" so I got the bouncer to extract her, turns out they were just enjoying some "party favors" but my immediate response was to think she was being raped or something. We left with me sobbing bc i felt like an asshole and also had the adrenaline pumping since I was ready to kill this guy. Long story short- I was super embarrassed but the next day she told me that she was happy to have such a good friend who would watch out for her when she can't for herself.
I dont think you over-reacted and I think your roommate is seriously blessed to have someone who cares about her like that. Im convinced that none of the room-mates I've ever had would even have cracked the door if they hadnt seen me in 4 days... give her a day to sober up/ get over her shameover and see if she says somthing. -
There's some statistic that you have something like 48 hours to find a missing person and, if you don't find them, the chances go down greatly that you will find them alive (or at all). In a city of 8 million people, where people routinely turn up missing or else are found dead in their beds a week after they've died, you did the right thing.
-
The roommate might think you overreacted ( I probably would have done the same thing, btw), but her mom is probably happy to know her roomy is looking out for her though possibly a little concerned about what her kid is up to.
Now next time you'll know to check under blankets

I would have done the same thing you did. :thumleft:
You're a great roommate/friend. -
Huh. When I got up this afternoon all my clothes were inside out on the floor too, but my roommate just smiled and winked at me.
-
your roomie is probably used to it. ;>)
-
Penny Night is once a week, right? (note capitalization)
-
Wrong thread dumbass.:) yep, in May.
-
i've been known to call police/family on MIA roommates/friends, much to the deep anger of said roommates. i'd still do it again.
