Finally priced out of PH

Friends and haters alike, sayonara! I found out tonight the new owner of my apt. building is doubling our rents if we want to stay. Not an option for me. We're currently on a month to month since the previous owner refused to renew our leases before selling. Not rent controlled or stabilized. I know this is happening all over the place, and not just to us.

Anyone know of an apartment that will accept one knitwear designer, two very small dogs and a great mousing kitty for around a grand or 1200? I don't care about the configuration of the apt, just need as much sq. footage as I can get to work in. I need to be able to get to my shop on Vanderbilt easily via bike or public trans. also.

thanks, it's been real.

  • I thought you said he wasn't going to raise it?
  • HE said he wasn't. Whoops! Changed his mind. Nothing illegal is occurring, unfortunately.
  • whoa, that blows. I know people who live in kensington and love it, and have been in some apartments behind the museum that are quite nice ... good luck!
  • I'm looking for pretty much the same (sans doggies) and am having a real tough time finding anything in the neighborhood. LOTS of stuff in Crown Heights, around the Franklin Avenue stop, but so far most of them are on somewhat sketchy blocks or in creepy buildings. Don't know what's available where dogs would be allowed, though.

Good luck. It's not a fun market right now. :(
  • It's better than it was last summer, way better, I went through the same thing then. I've been living here on a little reprieve that's now over. The prices in general are lower, and there are more apts, maybe because it's Feb. CH is fine with me, within reason. Franklin's a bit unsafe, I think.

I'm also finding a good percentage that will take pets, maybe 50/50. Good luck to you too, A666! We can compare notes over a drink somewhere down the line.
  • If you put some time into your search, I'm thinking you could still stay in PH...

I am surprised that you found affordable apartments that will take pets. I couldn’t find any that allowed dogs. Cats are easier…
  • Thats a shame! Look just over washington - I'm at Classon and we have a beautiful space very reasonably priced, with doggies allowed. There are two newly renovated buildings - lincoln and classon, over the soon-to-open Lincoln Deli, and Classon and Eastern Parkway. I have no idea what the places will go for, but there should be a sudden influx of at least 30 apartments in I'd say the next month or so, so keep an eye out on Craigslist.
  • I'm negotiating now for an old fashioned 2 bdrm, HUGE, on Eastern Parkway and Classon that I saw this am. 5th floor, tons of double windows, I loved it! The pets: no problem. I rarely answer ads that say no pets but I have found people are very flexible. One guy wanted an extra deposit, no big deal, my guys are trained. I may be getting a better reception because I have 2 tiny ones, not a big one, I don't know why, but it's not really an issue. I am going for older, slightly beat properties, avoiding new construction or landlords that are control freaks.
  • Subject: good luck!

    good luck!

this is a smart strategy: looking for " older, slightly beat properties, avoiding new construction or landlords that are control freaks."

there's so much new construction or 'remodeling' which just gives people another excuse to charge a fortune!

True, but I'm just now starting to find some of these that are now subsidized housing for moderate income folks. One broker told me that it sometimes varies a bit, but the general income bracket to be considered for these places is usually around $45-60K. Again, I'm not sure about places that allow dogs, but they're generally much nicer places than the other stuff at our rent range!
  • I think that Arielbl is on to something. The huge building on the northeast corner of Lincoln and Eastern Parkway has been undergoing renovation for a while. There's also a smaller building across the street (NW corner) that looks to be "in progress" - this building has appeared vacant for several years, but, no doubt, the owner sees the area changing and recognizes the corresponding income potential. Once these are completed, the dream of a neighborhood bar might not be a dream anymore.
  • Plus, don't forget the condos they're going to build at the corner of st johns and classon (currently a shell of an old building and a large mud pit, but guys come and work on it everyday)!
  • Franklin's a bit unsafe, I think.
i live on prospect btwn franklin & bdfrd... the apt nxt to mine has been empty for mths... call gateway management (out new owner) 718.399.9300 and ask about apt B4 at 649 Prospect... the bldg isnt the best, but the rents r cheep... last i heard it was $850... stabalized. the best part of the new owners is that we FINALLY have a new boiler... i live in a sauna now! its insane... all my windows are open all the time.

theres also a 2bd floor thru above the liq'r store on franklin... its on the top floor and has a huge deck... asking $1550... totally worth it... the only downside is that your mail is delivered to the store. call abby at 201.259.1773

theres been lots of yays and nays about the old jewish hospital... you can get a great apt for ur price range and maybe a little less... call alma realty... 718.636.3888

as for franklin being unsafe, well i dissagree... ive been here 7 yrs this april and its come a loooooooooong way...

btw... my hubby is a men's/women's knit wear designer as well... he was with may company...
