Holy crap! Raccoon in my window
so....I'm in bed reading with the window a few inches open....sometimes i have a revolving set of visitor cats (Floofy, Charlie, a few other random ones), which Stella always manages to spot immediately from her window perch.
stella is sitting there and starts to hiss and get all poofy. i look up expecting to see Floofy or Charlie and there's a damn raccoon standing on 2 feet looking in the window on the other side of the screen from Stella.
Scared the crap out of me! I slammed the window shut and hope he's not still out there (I don't have a light in my yard).
Damn...i like sleeping with the window a little open. now I have to worry about raccoons coming after my kittehs.

Damn ...you couldn't even get away if he came after you.
Sucks.
-
jeez, Em...way to freak me out some more! ;-)
(admit that i am freaking out a bit) -
Umm......he's gone. You scared him away and he's probably jumping around in someone's trash can right now.
I did good? 8-[ -
I got out my flashlight and took a look at the yard. I think he's gone now.
Something keeps coming by at night and digging in my tomato plants. I was thinking squirrels, but now i'm not sure.
i want him gone! -
Mr. or Ms. raccoon is not after your kitty. They are after your kitty food which is a tasty treat for them. They are for the most part perfectly harmless. Enjoy the wild life!
-
there is no kitty food in my yard (no food at all...no garbage either) and i enjoy the wild life when they are in the wild...not looking in the window 2 inches away from my cat
and although it is unusual for raccoons to attack domestic animals, it is by no means unheard of -
Ms. raccoon sees kitty and knows there is kitty food where kitty lives. thats why those other kitties come over- hoping for a nosh. Perhaps it is a little scary at first but there is no harm intended. there are alot of racoons in Brooklyn. I have kitties and we have had a number of them in the driveway and backyard.
-
There are a bunch of raccoons living in and around the park... My neighbor saw one in his backyard a few months ago and a friend of mine saw one on Third street in the middle of the night last summer.
Try not to leave food out or anything else that might attract them on their nocturnal foraging missions.
Lastly... Not to freak you out, but I read somewhere on the internets that two kids in the ps area got some awful parasite from touching/ingesting their feces (adult round ringworm I think, but I'm not quite sure) so be careful. -
he is here to katnap !!!
-
I still don't want raccoons in the window near me or my cats....no matter what their motive. There is no food in the bedroom either and I never put food garbage in the back cans.
and, yes, SJ, there was some raccoon feces thing that blinded somebody and hurt somebody else (can't remember details). -
I'm in C.G. and last Summer 3 different people on my block had "visits" from racoons. One of them got up because he heard some noise and the raccoon had trashed his kitchen andng it started to run back out the window (he got a photo of it - that thing was huge). I woke up one morning and my screen looked like it had been bitten through and something had tried to squeeze through.
You may want to think about putting bars on your window but they are expensive. Be careful! -
so, I just had some people over for a bbq and at dusk i look up and see the big raccoon on my neighbor's roof looking down at us...it finally leaves and then I look up again and see a baby raccoon (not tiny, but not grown) on MY roof looking down at us from the chimney.
damn...the whole family is living up there! -
Lock you doors!!!!! Er, windows?
Srsly call your landlord or somebody! -
Whatever you do, don't tussle with it and/or put yourself in the way of getting scratched or bitten by it/them. As I'm sure you know, you will then need to get treated for rabies which, I'm told, is far from pleasant.
-
Can we start an annual or semi-annual contest for "best subject line (with relevant post to follow) on a brooklynian message board"? I nominate this one.
-
i missed a baby raccoon last night?
and you need to get your landlord to get you a light out back, because it's dangerous in general not to have one -
AND if anyone happens to get scratched/bitten by a racoon you need to either bash its head in or trap it in a box right that moment. because if it tests negative for rabies, then you don't need to get shots
-
oy. this raccoon is out almost every night at sunset...walking on my roof and my neighbor's.
i was just outside with the kittehs and it was poking its head out...at noon! It was locking eyes with Jackson and I put the kittehs back in the house.
I don't want this raccoon to die....but I do want it to go away! HALP! -
KILL IT. Think of your helpless kittens that depend on you to protect them from horrible raccoons who want to gobble them up.

Oh, no!
One of Dolores' youngins has gone down to my neighbor's upstairs window and now can't get himself back up. He is trying to shimmy up the a pipe and can't make it. She came down and started trying to carry him up, but then stopped, climbed up herself and left him there and now he's crying for mama.
This is so sad! As much as I don't want her on our roof, I don't want her to abandon her baby. She needs to come back and pick him up -
Ok, teenager is gone....I gave them some space, so hopefully that means Dolores came back and got him
-
Here's the teenager:
-
Wait- you named them? It's gonna be like Mamacitas cat!
-
I haven't named the teenager yet. I named the mama Dolores because I don't like that name (no offense to anybody), and I didn't want to give her a cute(r) name.
That teenager doesn't have a name (yet). I'm glad he made it up the drain pipe.
I'm hoping that now that the kids are older, she'll be ready to relocate somewhere.
Oh, and El Senor Don Gato is totally Mamacita's cat, whether she wants to admit it or not -
Here's some less threatening images of raccoons, taken in my daughter's living room:

ask her if she'd like to adopt Dolores and her crew!
-
She'd be afraid of what they'd do to her flying squirrels!
